I'm looking for a differential to replace the one in my Z and want the strongest unit. Is a three rib not out off a Z just as strong as the Z's unit other then the shot pinned gears in them. I plan on running a 3:90 and would like to build the unit and replace rather then just changing the gear in the car.
A three rib is a three rib. There was nothing made that was special or any stronger. Trust me, When you severely abuse the drive train, ANY C5 case will not survive the thrashing
I believe it was DTE that tried to make an IRON diff case for the all out HP/TQ beast but, I don't think they ever followed through; ($$$$$????)
While you are in the differential, take a look at this post and consider up-grading yours to C6 ZO6 parts:

I am interested in this as well. Don’t mean to hi-jack the thread, but this is related. I used the single rib diff case that came standard on my 2000 MN6 coupe, and had all the internals upgraded to C6 Z06 parts as well as having 3:90 gears installed. My question is how much stronger is the three rib case compared to the single rib versions? Differential braces aside, at what horsepower/torque level is the three rib a must? Understanding that you can abuse a diff at any HP’TQ level, wheel hop, extreme launches, etc.

My DTE is also built from a single rib case. I can't imagine the three rib is that much stronger as compared to the brace installation. I didn't realize the case was a single rib when I spent the money, lesson learned. I use my tires as the break point, i.e., the tires will spin so there is no wheel hop. I also don't dump the clutch or do anything that I think will overload the differential as I know that is my weak spot. When you get into more hp, I think you have to be careful that you don't have too much confidence in the three rib case as they will still easily self destruct especially if you have any wheel hop.
