Default 1998 Performance

I have a stock '98 with a 6-sp and I am curious what they do in the 1/4. I just bought the car and I have not ran it yet. I have a race Friday night against a friend in a '72 Z-28 with a ZZ4 4-sp. He definately has me on horsepower but he has a terrible time trying to get it to the pavement. He has run the car and his best is a traction limited 13.6@108mph. Should I worry? Thanks guys.

Oh yeah and I was thinking about something. Has anyone taken out the plastic peices in front? The pieces that the Z06 screens cover. I unfortunately don't have fog lights so they really don't do anything and I have seen aftermarket ones that have holes cut in them. I was just curious if by removing them if I would gain anything. Thanks.

If your bone stock, and if you can launch and shift good. You should be about even with the Z28 based on the times you show it can do. From a roll, he likely will pull you since he is running 108 through the traps, because if your stock, your probably going to be around 104 or so in the traps. You might start to catch up when you get into the triple digits, since you have the aerodynamics.

If it's bone stock you might want to consider modifying or replacing air intake, the stock one is way restrictive. :yesnod:

I ran a 13.6 @ 106mph with a 2.25 60ft and extremely bad wheel hop off the line.

with the mods in my sig (execpt the MAF translator) I dyno'd at 315Hp and 327Lbs/Ft Tq.

with a little tuning via the MAF translator, I dyno'd at Carlisle this year @ 323.9 Hp and 333.7 Lbs/Ft Tq

I think you can take him! :D

Sounds like it'll be a good race!

You definately want to look at getting a Blackwing - or at least an open lid & K&N filter for the stock air box. On the 98, there are only 2 holes the size of quarters going into the stock airbox!

After you open up the airbox... then some cold air from the front will make a bigger difference!

Good luck!

I found a pic of my stock 98 airbox.. This is the rear - the front is completely enclosed!

Yes, some guys cut (with utility knife) the airbox lid. You probably want to get a K&N filter when you do that because the stock paper filter won't hold up too well to being exposed to the elements. Some guys purchase a 2002 Z06 lid which has openings on the front, as well as larger openings on the back.

Same goes for the 'fog lamp' area. Some guys drill holes in the stock plastic parts; or you can buy aftermarket Z06-style vents for there as well.

I still have the K&N I used on my 98. I only used it for 3 months before going with the Blackwing. I have the K&N cleaning/oil kit as well. Email me if you're interested in buying them - I have no plans for them.

I can pull 13.6 @ ~104 - 106 at 2700 above sea level with my 97 / MN6 and the mods below. My best has been 13.2 at 108, converting to sealevel that would be 12.97 @ 111. :smash:

I wouldn' t take it. Hold of until you get some mods and blow him away :D

Get the K&N replacement, duct tape it to the lower part of the airbox, leave the lid off, or spend the money for a zo6 lid like I did.
