What is one of the best torque converter to buy ???? looking to possibly add 3.73's and a TC real soon... to get soom uuuumph from my 98 A4 ... BTW... how can I find out what gears I have in here now ??? It's a stock car... got it used... can I look somewhere for this info ???
I believe most C5's have a sticker on the inside of the glove box door. The sticker lists all of the options on your car. If you see GU2 listed the ratio is 2.73. If you see G92 listed the ratio is 3.15 I have also heard that there is a tag on the differential but I don't know for sure or how to decipher it.
I also have an A4 '98 and I installed a Pro-torque 2800. I do have the 2.73 rear. Made a big difference all around in the performance and feel of the car. If you have more gear than the 2.73 and install a 2800rpm stall you will get a lower flash on the converter. The more gear you have works the converter less off the line therefore showing a lower flash. So if you have a 2.73 and order a 2800 stall then you should see something close to that. If you go and add more rear gear then the converter will not stall as high. I work for http://www.atiperformanceproducts.com and you can find some info on our site about converters but we don't make anything for the vettes other than Crankshaft Dampers.
If your doing more cruising then draggin' then go with the 3.42's and the PT2800..A great combo for the street and strip. I have it and it really performs.:yesnod:
Take a look at my homepage for more info..install pics and videos of my races at the track...:D
For the life of me I can't find what I got under there 3.15's or 2.73's.... I jammed my head under the car (putting a nice burn on my farhead, from the exhaust pipe)... typical klutz move for me... but anyway... came away with this info....
there is a steel plate with the following numbers on it...
12554837
GETRAG
6250001201
AJB-00167
now what does that tell anyone...
PS: Cant find a tag/sticker anywhere on the car documenting that "RPO CODE G92"... glove box / nothing == under hood nothing...
just want to know where I am starting from...
thanks all again for all the help... I know I am a dumb butt... and new to the vette sceene....
There's a verrrrry good chance you got the desert gears.....2.73. They come standard on all A4. You can take the car for a drive and check the speedo. If your driving at 75mph in 3 check the rpm's. If your doing 2730rpms..you have the 2.73...3150..a 3.15 gear ratio..mine says 3420..3.42. :yesnod:
Hope this helps..Now don't get into an accident..
With a 2.73 @1500 rpm's you will do 60mph. @2000 rpm's - 80mph.
3.15 - 1500 rpm's - 52 mph. @2000 rpm's 69 mph.
I don't have the code on my door either.
There is a capital B on my 3.42's. I think I remember the letter is the code. I don't know the others.
Hope this helps..Now don't get into an accident..
ha!!! Hope not.... You would laugh... I just got this thing, and I'll think... damn I'm outa toothpast... better get in the vette and go to the supermarket... then back home... then... hmm... I think I forgot something else... back in the car again... huh?! I guess it will wear off at some point... I'm going to go to the GYM (er? take the long way) and on my way will look at my RPMS and report back...
On the 98s look at the passenger side storage compartment lid, you will find the codes listed on it. Look for G92= 3.15s if you don't see it you have 2.73s. I have a PT2800 that has just been rebuilt by Pro Torque for sale, this converter has not been installed and has zero miles on it since the rebuild and has a 1 year warranty. I am asking $400.00 plus shipping e.mail me if you are interested.
JFPILLA : Ok.... just took my baby on the highway... 1500rpms=60mph and 2000rpms=80MPH...
vstella
then put that puppy in 3rd.... and at 75mph my rpm's were 2700
SO..... looks like I got the lowend of the stick... 2.73's
Now... considering I don't go to the track... just want that seat of the pants pull from the getgo ... and this is a daily driver... should I get the 3.42's ??? or go right to the 3.73's ??? and as far as T/C I think I'm liking the YANK but don't know what stall rate to get... what do you think is going to give me the bang I'm looking for ????
if I save the $1000.00 and go for the 3:43's w/ TC will I have that off the line pull I am looking for ??? what stall rate thou w/ 3.43's and do I have to reprogram the pcm at the same time ????

that sounds like a smokin' deal.... how does the stall rate.... relate to the gearing ????
how much more bang will I feel going from 2.73's to 3:43's with the 2800 one you are selling....
I want to plant my girlfriend in the seat from the line!!!! right now I get a good whooop when I hit WOT going about 35-40 ... it shifts perfectly and the engine screeems!!! but if I'm at 50 or 55 it really doesn't do much of a kaboom downshift...
I've allways wanted a vette... never could afford it... had a damn ford torus for years... then a chevy malabu... finally moved into a sports car... but only a 3.8L v6 mustang.... finanlly got where I need to be... I'm 30 now... and I got my baby!!!! not new... but it looks smokin'!!!
