I installed a new ignition in my 2002 C5 and I am currently using the three 10's method to program the new key to the car. Since I replaced the whole ignition, will I need to have a dealership do anything in order for my car to start normally?
Both the key and cylinder and the ignition switch??
Any other electronics like BCM get changed out????
Did you keep the same resistance value on the pellet in the key (assuming you change cylinder and key)??
bought a used ignition switch with cylinder and keys. Nothing else was changed.
This is the old assembly that I replaced. I just finished performing the three 10's and the starter will try to start the engine, but to no avail.
Pull the codes and post them. You have apparently gotten by the security issue since the engine cranks. If it were a security issue the engine would not crank.
Is the car a manual or auto trans??
Did you disconnect the battery before you removed the connections to the ignition switch??
yeah, the battery was disconnected for the removal/install. I went back out to the car to check the codes, then I checked the battery voltage. The voltage was at 10.9. I charged it and it started up perfectly. The key programming process took more of a toll on its charge than I anticipated. Thank you for your help

I didn't unplug my battery before removing my ignition switch and cylinder assembly. How will that effect things? Also thinking about coding the new cylinder with coding slugs from original lock cylinder. Funds have been limited lately so trying to avoid dealership and locksmith.
Im confused! Why don't you just insert the key into the old lock cylinder, turn it to the RUN/ON position, depress the tab on the side of the plastic lock cylinder housing and extract your OEM Cylinder. THEN,,,,,, Just insert it the OEM key cylinder set into the new switch assy. ZERO reprogramming required. The ONLY reason that you would need a reprogramming would be if you use a different Key Resistor set. Why in the world would anyone do that???
I always advise forum members to connect a battery charger while doing the BCM relearn procedure, it will draw down the battery and cause the relearn to fail.
Replacing the switch does NOT REQUIRE REPROGRAMMIng
I have replaced the Ignition switch including the key cylinder (which needed REKEYING) and also later the rear electrical switch portion and never had to reprogram the BCM or anything else. The key you use must have the same value resister pellet and that's all you need to start it. I did rekey my ignition at the Chevy dealer for $30 which was way cheaper than any locksmith in the Washington DC area. The switch only "feels" the pellet in the VATS system. It does not change anything.
