I heard a rumour that solely through programming one can make a 200mph C5 with a stock LS1. I doubt this is true, but I honestly don't know if this is possible. Is it possible? Can anyone shed any light on this?
I don't have enough specific knowledge to give you a complete answer, but I'd say that the most important factors determining top speed and therefore whether a stock LS1 C5 could hit 200 mph are: 1)engine power output; 2)gearing; 3)aerodynamics.
The way I see it, programming affects none of these, with the exception of you may be able to squeeze a bit more power out of the engine, but certainly not enough to add 25+mph to top speed.
Bottom line, :bs :seeya
I was told by a friend that a "friend of a friend" of his worked in GM engineering and claimed they could make a 200mph C5 by very finely tuning the fuel air mixture. It was almost believable but not quite.
Well technically you can make a 200 MPH LS1 by removing the speed limiter, that would LET it go to 200.....now getting it there is another story  :smash:  :D :jester

Does the LS-1 have a speed limiter in it?
I thought that I remembered hearing that it was speed limited to like 175 or something. But then again I could be wrong....wouldnt be the first time :hat

Nope, no speed limiter.
There is a rev limiter.
Maybe you could raise the rev limit to 10,000 and get to 200mph.
"We also knew from previous top speed testing roughly how much horsepower it took to achieve 200 mph in a C5 Corvette. 214 mph would have required almost 500 HP at the rear wheels and we knew we were not at that level of power."
Interpolating for the 14 mph difference, I think I was being conservative.
200 mph is not possible with a stock LS1....the top speed isn't a function of the rev limiter or tire size....it just runs out of HP at 175 mph....top speed in any car is reached with the proper tire size, differential gears and a transmission gear that allows peak HP level revs.

Yep, if their data is right, your numbers look reasonable to me. (Although we are getting into some seriously exponential functions and they are starting to get into some steep curves here, so I'd allow a bit more leeway in the guesstimate.) I would have guessed much lower. We are into 170 mphs now, and the c/d is low on these cars. I would have though that with the right gearing, you could get a Z06 to at least 190...
All you have to do is get a cargo plane, go to a high altitude and roller her out the cargo bay. She'll definitely hit 200 MPH before hitting the ground
