Well,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Its NOT a SMOG pump. Its an A.I.R. (Air Injection Reaction) Pump. The pump runs at engine start up for approx. 2 min. to inject FRESH AIR into the exhaust pipe before the O2 Sensors to allow the CATs to light off and come up to temp faster. Then it shuts off.
The PCM can command it on during part throttle operation to check for A.I.R. System & pump operation. The PCM monitors the output signal of the O2 sensors while the pump is running and that change in signal tells the PCM all is good or bad.
That part is a VACUUM OPERATED Valve that opens when the PCM commands the pump on. The PCM turns on a solenoid valve that allows manifold vacuum to the small port on the valve and the valve opens to allow the AIR Pump output to go to eash A.I.R Check Valve.
