With a forum that has been around so long, pretty much every topic has been covered before.
I have the SY 3500 and I love it with the 3.42 gears.

Tom
Drive my car and you will see what I mean. I was afraid after the install when I first got into the car that the installer charged me all that money, but never put anything in. Then I hit the gas....WOW!!!!!!!!
Regular driving it felt just like stock. Never heard of any slip codes or any of those rediculous claims. If its in Drive and you take your foot off the gas it rolls forward and back just like it did stock. Throughout the entire powerband it pulls like an animal. Don't settle for any other converter.
And for anyone else who has questions on any topic, DON'T EVER BE AFRAID to ask the forum. The only stupid question is one that isn't asked.

After only 7 passes with the Super Thruster, I immediately decided that I could have gone to an even higher stall. I talked with Mike at MMS and Mike at YANK ("Mike" squared? ) and they came up with the idea of a ProThruster 4200. I just picked it up today (also went from 3.42's to 3.73's - Jonny, you might also want to consider going right to the 3.73's as that could save you some money when you realize that you want more - going from your 3.15's to the 3.73's could get you about a half second right there AND save you $$$$ from not having to do the gear swap twice).
Once again, I was pretty surprised at the streetability of this higher stall converter. The Pro Thruster is somewhat looser than the Super Thruster but, still, very easy to drive around town and on the freeway.
I haven't jumped on it yet because I want to hot-cycle the new gears and let everything get seated before I womp on it Saturday at Carlsbad. I'll post again.
Jonny - this is the route that I have gone...so far. I am a drag racer AND this is also my daily driver. YOU will have to ask yourself what your goals are. If you are only going to the drags once or twice a year then maybe just get an ST 3500 with your 3.42's. This would be a VERY hot set-up. Several folks, Nitrovette included, went from the SY 3500 to the ST 3500 and suffered not a bit in streetability and gained in performance.
If you think you are going to be going to the track on a regular basis then I would definitely consider immediately going to a Pro Thruster. Mike at YANK has done an incredible job of matching folks with converter/gear combinations based upon their INDIVIDUAL needs. You might want to give him a call: 479-632-6355
In terms of best prices, shop around here on the CF. Look in the Wanted and For Sale sections for the C5. The Mall is also a good place. Or you can just order from one of the vendors on the CF or Mike. There are MANY good folks here who will be happy to help out.
I apologize for the long-winded post but if this helps you in terms of chosing a converter - and maybe saves you some money by not having to experiment with several converters, then perhaps it was worth it.
In terms of "stupid questions" - IMO there are NO stupid questions. The ONLY stupid question is the one that DIDN'T get asked! You are on the right track. I agree with others like Face - just keep on asking questions. I have learned more on these CF forums about my car than I ever imagined possible because I and others have asked questions here.
Also, Al is a good guy and, IMO, was just trying to guide you to some of the material you want through a search. While there are search capabilities here and I use them, I also like to ask some questions that have already been asked awhile ago, because maybe somebody out there has new updated information that could benefit me and others. Keep askin' - that's how we learn. And Welcome to the Corvette Forum!

With cooler weather coming up next week, this will be the first time I will get conditions similar to when I ran my car stock in February. It will be interesting to see the results.
Thanks!
