Is there a "square one" I can use to get my 2000 C5 headlights back in synchronization ? I put the drivers side up manually then when I turned them off forgot to return it to it's starting position. I have tried a bunch of "shots in the dark" (pun intended ?) getting them both in the same position manually , disconnect battery ,disconnect connectors ,etc. all results with lights going up & down but grinding for about 10 seconds after stopping closed.....HELP !
Where the light was before the controller tried to open or close it doesn't matter.
You're getting grinding so you have to either replace the motor or crack it open and replace the gear.
So , after replacing the gears , I'm assuming the headlights are up when I do this (with the battery & or connectors Disconnected) , you turn them off & the control will automatically re-synch them ? I guess I should just search for "headlight gear replacement" on the Forum & it will give me that info ? Thank you very much for your reply , I can't say how much I appreciate all the help the Members of this Forum have been to me both with Technical help & hooking me up with some GREAT parts at unbelievably reasonable prices , you all are restoring my Faith in Humanity ! It really is a great feeling to be a part of a wonderful Community like this....Thanks to ALL of you !
Right. The corvette does not really track where the lights are. There aren't even limit switches.
Here's how it works:
You turn the lights on, the car drives both motors up. Each motor stops once it stalls and current gets high. When you pop them down, same thing: they both go down until each motor stalls, then each motor is stopped.
So once you replace the gears, simply leave both lights up or both lights down. Then flick them up, down, up, down, till you're satisfied that it all works properly.
...lights going up & down but grinding for about 10 seconds after stopping closed...
It seems you probably have a broken plastic gear in the headlights.
Get a kit like this one (pay attention because there are 2 different kits: one for "97 to early 2000" and another for "late 2000 to 2004") and follow these step-by-step directions. You'll save money and they will last forever
You might need these as well (the rubber bump stops).
There is a TSB, that calls for shimming the driver's side motor. The parts needed for this are included in the above mentioned kit.
Also, in my experience - yours may differ! - my epoxy took ages to set. Not one day, but a while longer. I even put it in a hot room (a server room, heh) to get it to set faster.
