1999 C5 Service Column Lock
The column does not lock now. I can turn the wheel with no key in the ignition.
Having it towed from the alignment shop to the dealership to diagnose. Can someone else who has dealt with this issue comment on the dealers response to the tsb? What should I expect to pay for a repair?
I'm not finding many instances in which the column was stuck in the unlocked position.
Is this the "Service Column Lock" notification something that will keep the car from starting?
I have a 1999 C5 6 speed coupe
Thanks

UOTE=About2Bite;1595105722]I dropped my Corvette off for an alignment and the shop called me stating the car wouldn't start. Went in and "Service Column Lock" was displayed on the DIC. Battery was low, had to charge it. Car would turn over but would die immediately.

I agree with 8VETTE7; I wouldn't send the car to the dealership. Have it towed home, install a good CLB like the LMC5, ensure the battery has a proper charge (or buy a new battery) and go about your business.

If it were ME,,,,,,,, I would pop out that POS GM part and just plug in the harness to the column lock assy to see if you can get the car back on the road. It looks like this:

IF,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, You get LUCKY and the car runs again,,, Get the LMC5 and install it ASAP!

Had the exact same issue come up on mine. Ordered the part, installed in 30 minutes which should really have been 15 but I had a hell of a time getting one of the pins out of the connector as the release tab was bent.
Put the key in the ignition and the problem was gone. Been about 3 weeks since I did it and not a sign of the old service column lock message.

Waiting for my lmc5, will be here this evening. Question????(( Note: For manual trans or export C5s, locate and detach connector from steering column lock relay above BCM.)))
Looking at the picture above (Bill Curlee)were is this part---above the BCM,, or at the steering column. I all ready have the GM Column Lock part...I can turn the wheel with or without the key in/out... thanks.
Have it ready to install lmc5---- but there is no part attached at the steering column or the BCM (guessing the metal box next to fuse box)_????
UPDATE------------LMC5 installed. no remove key********** no column lock message.......FIXed....

a few years later the service column lock message returned as i said sterring did not lock ,but now it would shut off gas supply
so towed back to same dealer they replaced harnessK 2.195 and also replaced lock2 .195 COST OF THAT REPAIR COST $654.95
so now a few years after so called fix
I now have the same message SERVICE COLUMN LOCK. car will start as always but will not move but a few feet gas supply shuts off.
when a recall is issued does it not fix the problem forever.WTF

If it were me, I would pop off the close out panel under the drivers dash, remove that CRAP recall harness and relay assy and reconnect the OEM column lock motor harness to the cars harness.
MAKE SURE that the battery is 100% charged and fully functional!
Then you should be able to hear the column lock motor lock and unlock when you turn the key on and off.
IF you get that far and it works again. WASTE NO TIME IN ORDERING THE LMC5 and get that bastard installed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Other wise, ONE DAY,,,, you will be stranded with 2 MPH fuel cut off! AGAIN!

If you want more info why you should install the LMC5, take a look at this link:

The car only had 22,000 original miles, and was a garage Queen. I got an excellent deal on it. I checked the Carfax before I got it, and it says no outstanding recalls.
Thursday evening (two days ago) I tried to back the car down the driveway to wash it, and the Service Column Lock warning appeared and the car stalled. I spent that evening reading the Forum, pulling fuses, switching the battery out with my Trans Am, trying all the different keys and remotes for the Corvette, but to no avail. I did order the LMC5 bypass and the unlocking tool. They should arrive by next weekend.
Today I called the local dealer, and gave them my VIN. They confirmed what Carfax showed me back in February, that both GM recalls for the steering column lock had been done timely. They had absolutely no information to give me regarding why I have that message, why the steering column is locked, and why the car won't go over 2 miles an hour in a straight line.
I was under the impression that the recalls entailed removing the steering column lock, such that even if you got the warning that the steering column would not lock, but just the fuel pump with shut off at 2 miles an hour. Is that incorrect? If my steering column locks does that mean that either of the two recalls were properly installed in the car?
If you have any information, please advise. Thank you.
P.S. I am probably the luckiest person with this problem, as it happened in my own driveway. The problem was it was at the end of the driveway, and I had to push the car halfway up onto the grass to be able to get one of my other cars out to drive to work! Still not complaining.
