Well yesterday I took my car to Black Magic Racing and Dave installed my ASP pullies. I was surprised how smoothly the install went. Jacked up the car, pulled the T1's & steering rack, 10 minutes the pulley was in, and we put the rack and bars back in. I always thought this was hard install, but Dave made it look easy and let me help :D
I was pleasantly surprised at the difference. I was worried that a pulley was BS mod. Acceleration is quicker as redline came a lot faster...I was caught off guard and hit the rev limiter on my first 2 power shifts
I don't have HP #'s yet, but am going to have the car dynoed on Saturday.
The biggest surprise of all is that I can't notice any power loss to my accessories. My windows are just as fast and my lights are bright while the stereo system (Alpine,MB Quarts/JL Sub/1000watts) hasn't been comprimised. I haven't tested the air conditioning yet.
I have to thank those you helped get me the right part numbers for the belts and crank bolt in my last post
Re: ASP Pulley installed...results inside! (bglmn)
If you are doing it yourself at home, it could be done in maybe a hour if you were workin good and had a helper to get the rack out of the way. If you havent done it before, set aside 4-6 hours.
I agree, if you knew what you were doing and have done it before..1-2 hours. The only time consuming portion of the install is pulling the steering rack which really needs 2 people. You just remove the driver side shock bottom and use 2 people to help it rotate out.
I also have H/C and every bolt-on, so take that into consideration when I say I really felt the differences. My gains maybe higher than a closer to stock car. Any how, I'm happy with the mod :yesnod:

I have never thought of disconnecting the lower shock portion. Does this eliminate having to loosen the front x-member bolts and useing a prybar to get the clearance you need? Thanks.

Actually I forgot to mention that, you do need to take out the 4 bolt from the right x-member and pry it back a bit. By also unbolting the lower shock bolts the rack comes out really easy and it takes less twisting and scraping to get it out because you don't have to worry about clearing the shock body. Unbolting the x-member and lower shock mounts only takes a minute and makes it a snap. :yesnod:
When I was over at A&A Corvette Specialties, Andy got a little bored waiting for me to bring him some last minute mods (changed my mind alot), so got one of his crazy ideas (you know like the frame savers) on how he could quickly and easily torque the crank bolt. He welded the appropriate socket to a very long wrench at such an angle that he could torque the crank bolt from above the engine bay with enough leverage to rotate the bolt to spec. It was pretty cool, we got a kick out of it.
Re: ASP Pulley installed...results inside! (RCswish)
Guys, you neither need to remove the bolts from the crossmember, nor do you need to unbolt a shock. Not sure who started all that but I certainly didn't unbolt anything but the 2 bolts that hold the rack on itself.
Then I need to watch you!! I can't imagine doing it without dropping the crossmember. There was the active handling bracket getting in the way of the power steerring lines that run along the rack, that's why we loosened the lower shock mount. Took half a minute and the rack slid right out. We had to be able to rotate the steering box to avoid hitting the bracket, but the shock kept getting in the way.
Anyway, I love working on the C5's. There really is quite a difference between them and the F-Bodies. Ummmm, no comments on which one I like better since I am the President of an F-Body club... :smash:
Thanks for letting me work on your hot rod Robert!
Re: ASP Pulley installed...results inside! (Black Magic)
JMX, I think different years are setup a little differently (don't quote me on that one) I know my rack wouldn't have just slid out with just the 2 bolts removed. I would have destroyed the power steering cooler if that was the case. Is your vette a 97-98? I wouldn't mind seeing the under side of your front end if you have picture handy.
Black Magic, thanks for hookin up those pullies. I like it when people treat my car if it was their own
Re: ASP Pulley installed...results inside! (RCswish)
RCSwish, you remove the power steering cooler before moving the rack. With it removed, the rack will slide out of place enough to get to the pulley. The rack never needs to be totally removed from the car, just pushed over about 2-3 feet. The actual rack gearbox still stays in the engine bay as its kinda big to slide out between the frame and crossmember. Regardless, with it moved over, you have more than enough room to get to the front of the engine for the cam swap.

 Man that sounds very risky with the amps. I hope you have no problems , but it sounds like you'll be putting a big strain on your alternator and battery.

While driving he'll have no issues what so ever. Alternators hit their max charging amps at a fairly low RPM, so if before it was 1400rpms (at the engine), now maybe it'll be 1600rpms. Most people dont leave their amps cranked way up at idle (too loud!), they just crank them up at highway speed to overcome wind noise. My stereo setup with the STOCK pulley had charging issues while driving, and now with the ASP pulley the issues are no different at all while cruising because either way, the alternator was hitting its max capabilities while driving.
Jmx....ya your absolutely right, I guess I could have work around the steering rack while it was only partly out.
I have no problems with the stereo yet...as far as something going wrong with the alternator...we'll see. I have an Optima battery so I'm not too concerned with that.
Is there such thing as getting an alternator pulley to counter this power loss?
