Default TPMS question

I'm looking to test some new TPMS before mounting tires on my new-to-me honest-to-God mag wheels.

I'm not getting any answer when I do the training. The old wheels and tires work fine but the new rims with the new TPMS (chinese knockoffs) are mum. These are the 97-2000 models that are supposed to be compatible with my 98. They appear to have the right part numbers.

Do I need to have tires and air pressure for a TPMS to train?

I would bet you need to have them mounted and pressurized.

I am not sure on the Corvette system, but I have other setups and if there is no pressure the sensor shuts down to preserve battery. I would think the Corvette system would be the same otherwise the shelf life prior to purchase would be diminished.

I tried using two different brands on my C5. I got the beep when I programmed them with a magnet, but neither brand ever worked. Sorry, forgot the brands. And no point in getting factory sensors as their batteries will be dead by now or soon. So now I just put up with the "service" message.

Thanks! I did query the manufacturer but they are on the other side of the world so it will take some time for them to respond.

I will pressurize them before I try to train them again.

I understand that the batteries in the '01 - '05 C5 TPMS sensors can be replaced. ("'97 - '00 are different)
Anybody know the battery part number?

I want to say mine worked at 0psi... But that really doesn't help you since you no longer have the same sensors. I also replaced mine with ebay aftermarket ones and those programmed with a magnet just like the OEMs. I see some of the other guys above are saying this is a crap shoot. Given their general knowledge on this stuff I'll defer to them. Almost sounds like nobody here can answer your question because there may not be any way to know the answer.

I've replaced them on the 97-00 sensors. Not fun, but I did it. There's how to videos out there.
