Default check engine - code P0442

Today, out of the blue, the check engine light came on.

I pulled all of the codes. The only active one was 10 PCM P0442 C H.

I checked the list and it means "Evaporative Emission (EVAP) System Small Leak Detected"

I cleared the code. Went for a drive and it didn't come back.

I guess this might be my gas cap or ? I actually just replaced it like a year ago, since the original one broke and wouldn't screw down tightly.

Guess I won't worry about it unless the code comes back.

I went through an ordeal with this sucker (and his cousins) on my '02 4runner with 235k miles. Dealer pressurizes the entire evap system with a smoke machine and looks for leaks (brilliant!). In my case - found none - until - on a hunch - they removed the gas tank crash guard - dropped the tank a few inches - and looked above the tank with a flashlight - voila - billows of smoke found. Leaky flange where the fuel pump mounts to the gas tank....

EVAP small leak. Can be intermittent. Really the best way to find this is with EVAP test equipment. They use a flow meter to show IF there is actually a leak at that time & can add smoke if a leak is indicated. The most common leaks are gas cap & vent solenoid/valve.

Your local friendly garage may have the equipment to test this. Or you could round up the usual suspects. your call.

Did you purchase gas that day? Could be just a loose cap.

I think it was just a loose cap. The code hasn't come back since.
