Default When do you replace the fuel filter

Just getting the new motor broke in, I figured it would be a good time to replace the fuel filter.

It seems to be a dealer only item because it has some kind of pressure regulator on it.

At what mileage should the filter be replaced and is there any type of adjustment to increase fuel pressure on it?

I'm interested in the answer to this one, also.

I was in for some warranty work last week and the tech tried to charge me for replacing the fuel filter and another fuel related job. All he was supposed to be doing was an alignment and checking out my passenger door lock. They tried to charge me an extra $250 for that excess crap! :mad :mad

Needless to say, I did NOT pay for the filter, etc because I really didn't see the need for a new fuel filter with 30K miles on the car. Am I right or wrong?

What's the correct mileage for a fuel filter change on our cars?

Changed mine at 30k the a few weeks ago while it was at the shop. It's around $50-60 and very easy to install. Why wait?

My dad has an 01' Silverado and the fuel pump died at about 25K miles earlier this year. The GM dealer said it was due to a clogged fuel filter and that they recommend changing the fuel filter every 10K miles. I use to change every 30K miles on my vehicles but will now do it every 10-15K. I would rather pay $5 then $500 for a new fuel pump.

Just to add this to the discussion, there is no recommended service by GM (not the blood sucking dealers) for 100k miles according to the owners manual.

According to the service manual "Periodic replcement of the fule filter is not required". I replace mine at 20,000 miles (3 years).

30k miles or three years is probabley a good idea and cheap insurance. especially in the cold weather parts of the country where moisture condensation in the gas tank can be a problem. my guess is GM doesn't recommend fuel filter service because they'll sell that to you when the pump craps out from a lack of lube/cooling from low fuel flow. just my $.02 :hat

Early model C5's have the pressure regulator on the end of the fuel rail on top of the engine. The filter is located above the transmission in the rear. Later model C5's (I don't know what year they changed) have a filter/ regulator unit that is above the transmission and costs about ten times :cuss what just the filter costs, but you're getting a new regulator each time you change. I cahnged my filter at 30K and now at over 60K my regulator (or injectors)is starting to leak the pressure down when the car sets for a few days.

How do you know the pressure is leaking? Did you install a gauge or is there a difference when starting?

An indicator of fuel pressure leak is slow starting the first start after the car has set for a few days, then it starts almost instantly the rest of the day. If that sympton is noticed, then put a fuel pressure gage on the fuel rail. Start the car one more time to get running pressure on the gage then shut the car off and observe the pressure that remains on the gage. Watch it for the next day or two just to see how well it holds pressure.

I have replaced my fuel filter already on my car and I have 27,000 miles now. You will need a $2 removal tool to get the filter off the car. As of 99 the regulator is built into the filter, 97 & 98 are on the fuel rail. I really dont see the need to boost the pressure on your car with the mods you have. It has been my experience that the fuel pressure will drop in a matter of hours with the key off. My car starts fine even with the pressure down after a few days of not running.
