As they say, a chain is only as strong as its weakest link, and when compared to a solid brass gear the rubber insert becomes the new weakest point, but Rodney Dickman's kit includes new rubber inserts.
These inserts along with the rubber bump stops are designed to absorb the sudden shock at the end of the doors travel each time the headlights are opened or closed. Without them it's just the bump stops...
Exactly, seems like a good reason to get ones with rubber inserts to me. I don't want the motor itself or the actuator arm becoming the next weakest link. haha
Anyway, anything is better than stock, and will probably outlive the rest of the car.
^ just sayin' go franker because when my stock nylon gears initially failed, I went with dickman's...new rubber inserts and all.
after not too long guess what? headlight issues again.
re-opened the motor casings and found the new rubber inserts to be shredded and falling apart, causing the headlights to not operate correctly.
I recall shoving nuts inside the dickman gear cavities where the rubber inserts went so the spindle would be locked in place (a'la franker design) and calling it good.
this was just my experience. it was also before the franker gears came out with their solid versions. had I known of the franker design way back when, that's what I would have gone with.
My drivers side gear stripped so I used Rodneys kit to replaced both sides. Top quality kit and includes everything you need including brass gears and new grease. Best $92 I ever spent.
