Default Headlight close sound

My headlight makes a god awful when i close it. A friend told me that it was the plastic gears stripped. Is this the problem or could there be something else?

Thanks,
Tad

Time to replace the gears on the motor. Here is a link on doing that.

There are also dozens of youtube videos about the process.
Thanks 8VETTE7, I figured that was the case. That's my first step.

Check ebay. I got a set of aluminum gears for pretty cheap. It's all pretty straight forward and access to the area is pretty easy.

It's pretty easy to change the gears out; don't be daunted by the task. There will be some different steps depending on if you have the early metal housing style (97- mid 00) or later plastic style (later 00- 04) but overall methodology is the same.

Rodney Dickman sells a really good completely gear kit that I recommend.

My drivers side gear stripped so I used Rodneys kit to replaced both sides. Top quality kit and includes everything you need including brass gears and new grease. Best $92 I ever spent.

By the way, I like your handle! It looks as though I'm going to buy his kit.
Thanks

This is the kit I got. Includes all the same stuff, just an aluminum gear instead of brass.

Interesting, is there a benefit to either aluminum or brass?

Cost I imagine. It probably weighs a little less. Should be way stronger than stock, so it should be good enough.

Ok thank you. That looks like another option as well.

I prefer the Brent franker gear. The dickman ones use rubber inserts like stock and can get chewed up just the same.

The bfranker gear does away with the rubber and that problem can't happen again.

JMO of course i don't even run pop-ups any more

I wasn't aware the rubber insert was a failure point. My nylon gears were thrashed, but the stock rubber inserts looked supply and new other than a bit of dirt and grease. I'd love to replace the whole system with some Radioflyers, I'll accept donations. haha

As they say, a chain is only as strong as its weakest link, and when compared to a solid brass gear the rubber insert becomes the new weakest point, but Rodney Dickman's kit includes new rubber inserts.

These inserts along with the rubber bump stops are designed to absorb the sudden shock at the end of the doors travel each time the headlights are opened or closed. Without them it's just the bump stops...

Here are some links to help you out: get a kit like this one (pay attention because there are 2 different kits: one for "97 to early 2000" and another for "late 2000 to 2004") and follow these step-by-step directions. You'll save money and they will last forever

You might need these as well (the rubber bump stops).

There is a TSB, that calls for shimming the driver's side motor. The parts needed for this are included in the above mentioned kit.
