Well I am doing everything else what the hay. 6 speed, H/C, projected HP 400-420 Tr224/112 with decent TQ on bottom. If I go with 4.10s will I have to feather the throtle to avoid massive wheel spin? Which unit will have the best durablity? I understand Getrag makes the 3.73s dont they make our stock 3.42s? Which gear will is the whiniest?
I have had 3.42's and now have the 3.73's. Neither of these gear sets make any noise. True the 3.42's are made by Getrag but the 3.73's are shot peened for better quality.
Its a hard choice to make... when in doubt, just add more HP!!
The beauty of a mn6 is you select the tranny gear. There for why limit your choices by selecting too low a rear gear. With the 4.10's if you think they are reving too high just shift up to the next gear, and when you want more pop down shift.
When I went to the 3.73's I purchased the entire carrier. I bought it through a GP from TByrne. At that time the gears were not available by themselves like they are now. What I am actually thinking of doing is to install a M12 and Z06 3.42's. :)

I would like to know which ones are better too...when you see the prices on our vendors sites are these prices for the entire unit/carrier??? A guy I know said that he just had the inside worked on...if that is the case would I be able to swap out the guts in my 3.15's for 3.42 or 3.73's? How much would this cost for parts and labor to install it?
By the time you buy gears, bearings etc and the labor to install it all in the case... it's just better to buy one already built. I've had a couple built and it cost as much as buying a built unit. I have 4.10 s in stock and can get you other ratios.
No doubt the 4.10 will be the best for the track. My concern second to performance is driving at 75 to 78 mph. I would like to be at 1800 or so rpms. Driving 200 miles ar 2100 rpms might take cockpit noise a bit overbearing. For this reason I am leaning towark 3.90 or even 3.73s.
What would my mph be at 80 mph with these gear choices? Seems like it is 1650 with stock 3.42s.
Thanks,
Greg
This became evident to me after doing my homework last night. Thanks all the responses and thanks for the info yesterday Andy!

Well, I have a simular motor, just a LITTLE milder cam, but respectable power, and traction is a problem in first and second. With 3.73:1 gears and 335/35-17 fairly sticky tires I have to baby it off the line. Then, after I'm hooked and running good at WOT, at about 4800-5000 rpm it breaks the tires loose again!! I don't dare powershift to second, it just fishtails halfway through. I can't imagine how you could hookup on street tires with a 4.10:1 gearset  If yours turns out anything like mine, the 3.73:1 gears are a better choice. Besides, you can get them NEW, with shotpeened gears like on the Z06, so they're plenty strong. :chevy
6 Speeder,
Fish tailing down the track was my concern. I am used to shifteing just short of power shifting, sounds like i am going to have to modify my technique and feather into it through 3rd. What rpm are you at in 6th at 75 to 80 mph?
Well, my rear tires are a little shorter in diameter than stock (26.3 Vs. 26.7) but I am turning about 1900 at 80 in 6th. It is a very usable gear at those speeds :D
Well I have decided to wait on the gears. I want to wait to do them till I get to go for a spin in cars with different gearing. Also I want to see my dyno gragh and run it at the track with 3.42s so that I can get some idea whether 4.10s would have me shifting into fifth at the traps.
Thanks for the input thus far, keep it coming as I am only putting off getting the gears at least until someone comes up with a hardened output shaft for the short side. I figure I can save some on labor having it all done at the same time. On the down side will I need to reprogram with LS1 edit?
If you only plan on doing heads and cam I would go with 4.10s. If your future plans might include nitrous then go with 3.90s. As far as drag racing goes 4.10s is the right gear if your sticking to 346 H & C all motor. I found that 346 H & C + nitrous with 4.10s is too much gear for the traps(shifting to 5th). I am running 3.90s and can trap in the low 130s spinning the motor.
