Default C-5 Service Messages

My 2001 C5 will for several weeks or months run the following messages...and then they go away for a while, but do come back:

Service ABS, Service Traction Control, Service Active Handling

I pulled the codes:

28-TCS C 1214 H C...which means "Solenoid valve relay contact or coil circuit open."

U 1064 H and U 1160 H I could not find them listed, but they are not currently an issue.

In what order should steps be taken to resolve the C 1214 issue so my C5 has all those safety features all the time? If it involves sophisticated mechanical skills/knowledge, I will have to find a technician to do such, most likely. Thanks. Barry

I had the 1214 code on my '01 and had to replace the Electronic Brake Control Module. I bought a new one on Amazon for $500 or you can get them repaired for about $150. I removed and replaced it myself in a few hours. Replaced hoses and belts while I was in there. I followed instructions I found on the internet.

what if the problem actually is corrosion at the ground connections? if that were the case then the Elec. Brake Control replacement would not have solved the problem?

I cleaned the grounds, but it wasn't the problem. It was a bad EBCM. There is a diagram showing where all the grounds are. Maybe someone can post it. How many miles on the car and does it get wet a lot?
At first the warnings were intermittent then after awhile they would not go away.

When I bought the car one year ago it had 20,000 miles on it. It is a 2001 C-5. I have put 5,000 miles on it so far. It is in such good condition that we believe it was probably always garaged. When I mentioned that to a local repair facility they said that corrosion can occur at those ground points and not be weather-related, being electric. Not being well-versed in automobile construction and repair I just don't want to spend a lot of money without some comfort in knowing the issue will be fixed. My cousin who has owned 7 Vettes personally thinks I should just drive it and not worry about it too much; however, with such a well-designed car that drives so well, I feel having those safety features operative all the time is important.

My 01 had 70K miles on it when I started getting the service ABS/Traction control messages. I checked the grounds and they looked like new, no corrosion. I hope that is all it is for you, but the odds are the EBCM has failed. I didn't really care about the ABS or traction control but the warnings every time I started it up drove me nuts. I decided to fix mine because I like everything to work like it came from the factory and it would be hard to sell with those warnings popping up.
I don't know if there is a positive test for the EBCM. Maybe someone else does.
Do a search "C5 Corvette 1214 code". There are a lot of threads about the EBCM. It is a common problem.

Ground locations. Probably 101 or 102

The instructional video does not clearly show everything that needs to be done. I must face it, I would need an EBCB Removal and Replacement book for dummies! I am just not able to follow through doing that myself....looks like my only option is to hemorrhage a lot of money and have a dealership stick it to me. I admire so many of you folks with the knowhow and experience to literally take matters into your own hands.

Thank you for all the feedback.

I would not try to repair the module myself, but if you want to replace it or send it out to get fixed, here are the instructions to remove it. I removed the belt and upper hose when I did mine. Made it a lot easier to get to and I was planning to replace them. Just take your time, follow the directions and you could probably do it. You can buy a new one for $700 or fix yours for $150. A dealer will charge you $2000 to $3000 to do the job. So think about it.

I have not decided yet what to do. I did speak with the Corvette technician who is the shop foreman at the Chevy dealership. He said he was not sure that he could still get a replacement module from GM and did say he would have no problem in my supplying one for him to install, but that there would not be a module warranty since it was not from GM. If GM does have the module, he figured the cost would be for module and labor about $1,200.00.
He said there could be numerous reasons for the situation such as a tire sensor, etc., etc....so he would suggest letting them have the car for a day and determine for sure if it is the EBCB that needs replacing. And, who knows how much money that would cost!

I took mine off of my 2001 in about 45 minutes without removing anything but the module.
It took so long because it took a while to find it. Who would have expected it to be in front of the engine?
I drove the car while I sent my module in to get fixed.
There is a connector clamp on the connector, and four small bolts that hold it on.
No fluid comes out,and it is a clean installation.
$1200 is too much. the mechanic is going to spend an hour tops.
You could drive it across country, stay in a couple nice hotels for that!
You could do it if you had another person hold the light and you took it off.
Putting it back on is as easy as it was taking it off. you just have to work from the side of the hood.
It is a module that electrically energizes some coils.

I think a dealership will charge you over $1200 for the module alone. Did he look up the price? You can get a new Delco unit for $700+ on Amazon. With diagnosis, remove and replace and test, I would think it would be a couple hours of labor.

For pre 2001 EBCM I found a place that will repair them for $280 and give a 2 year warranty.

I wish I lived close to one of you guys! I would make an offer you could not refuse! LOL! I just have to think about this because honestly, I can change oil, filters, and drive nails into soft pine, and chop firewood....that's about all in my skill set!

Thanks, I marked the page....hope I never need it. Was always told that pre-2001 couldn't be repaired AND sell USED for $1500. plus.

If you can change the oil you can do this.. There are 6 Torx screws (Either T10 or T15) and 2 wire connectors then it pops right off

Is why they mention this:

"please be aware not all EBCM can be saved or repaired ,also if there has been a prior repair attempt you should callus let us know so we consider if we want to repair such case.
