I have a leak in one of my CV boots. I am stuck trying to separate the axle from the hub. I bought an axle press but it will not do it, it just bends and deforms the lug nuts that are holding it on. Any suggestions?
Wow that must be really stuck! Did you try a large punch and hammer?
While the puller/pusher was loaded I hammered on the bolt and nothing moved at all. I have talked to some local vette guys and they said theirs came right apart. I sprayed it with PB nut buster and put it back together, will try again in a few days.
Buy a can of Kroil from Kano Industries. It is what we use in industry in many applications. Best product for penetrating and breaking down rust you will most likely ever use.

So the weather has cooled in Florida so I decided to try this again. I took the nut off last March and filled the gap with Kroil, when I took the nut off today it was still in there. I put the tool J-4212S on the hub and started cranking, I heard a loud pop and thought it had moved, nope.
I would have to heat the hub bearing assy, don't really want to do that. Yet. I suppose I could try taking the axle and hub out as a unit and try to get it into a press. But lots of fragile aluminum to worry about doing that.
I did mine about 7 years ago, cajandudes method, don't remember it being that tough. But if I remember right, took nut off and freed the shaft with car on the ground with a 10 lbs siege hammer. I elected to install a new shaft as opposed to changing the boot, so wrecking the shaft threads was not an issue. The tough part for me was getting the shaft out of the differential. Removed the upper control arm from the frame as opposed the messing with the ball joint. Looked like a lot of work to change the boot, compared to the cost of new shaft. Good luck.
