98 C5 - get codes without DIC
Hello All,
I just got my 98 vette a month ago.. Check engine light was on when I got the car, But the DIC does not function yet, Have not gotten that far yet. But I would like to get this check engine light off my dash...
How can I get the codes If DIC not working??
Or do I have to get the DIC working first?
Thanks,
Ant...

I was in a similar situation. I bought a $50 OBDII code reader.

You don't need to spend a cent to get emissions codes read.
Stop by your favorite parts stores and most will put their hand held reader on it free and can tell you why the CEL is on. They cannot see vehicle specific codes ( there are many hundreds of possible vehicle specific codes) but emissions codes are standardized across every car made.

Great,
Thought I could do that.. I'm gonna get them to clear any and all the codes and start from scratch to see what's present.. Would the TPS cause CEL?
Just got all new TPS but cant program them without DIC..
Thanks,
Ant..

You will probably have get your own reader. The parts store will read your codes but most will not reset them.

What is wrong with your Drivers Information System?? Does the RESET Button work at all? Do any of the buttons function?

Been fixing so many other little things , Just haven't had time to do it all yet..
I had the gauge cluster out to swap out buttons, It didn't fix it... I am pulling it again to see if the buttons are getting the 5 volts needed from cluster ( I'm thinking the cluster is bad) ... If I am correct the Grey wire to the buttons is the ground wire and one of the other wires should show 5 volts, Am I correct??
I am gonna try to do it today after work at 330...
Ill post back as soon as I know the outcome..

Ok everyone,
Pulled the cluster out and checked wires going to the buttons.. cluster is plugged in and car is running
With blk probe from meter on grey wire as ground..
Car running
Blk Wire 14 v
yel wire 14 V
Blu wire 11.58 v
Red wire 11.58 V
Grn wire 11.65 V
Wht wire 11.58V
BRWN wire 11.58V
Ornge wire 11.58V
Grey Wire Ground
Purple Wire 5.07 V
I am thinking something in the cluster is bad... Am I correct??... These readings are from the plug going to the buttons from the cluster... Can someone shed some light here....
Thanks for any help guys...

Hello again guys,
I am not the best with electrical.. From what I can make of this I should have 5V at the buttons... I believe the buttons get its power from the cluster but should only be sending 5Vto the buttons but according to the meter I am getting at least 11v at the plug on most of the wires does this indicate a short in the cluster??
Thank you,
Ant....

That would be an affirmative.. Should be close to or = to 5VDC..

Dont know if they are still availablle new! Contact Vette Nuts and see if he has a good used unit.
I DONT know of anyone who can work on the clusters. There are ZERO internal circuit schematics available. DO NOT throw it away.
Its good for parts and you will need to transfer over your odometer IC to retain the OEM mileage of your car..
I wish I had a dozen!
Have you disassembled the cluster and examined all of the boards and connecting wiring ect Could be something as easy as a poor main board connection.. Its pretty easy to break it all down and inspect..

Hey Bill,
I will break it all down and inspect and see what I find..
I went ahead and Contacted Vette villians and Brian there has sent me a known good used unit.
Charged me 100 bucks, Shipped... Not to bad... How do I transfer mileage from my cluster to new cluster?? Didn't think I could do that..
Thanks,
Ant...

There is a smalll IC Chip on the motherboardthat contains ALL the mileage data. It has to be DE-SOLDERED from the OEM Module and RE-SOLDERED into the doaner module.
If you dont have electrical circuit board and or IC soldering expierence, it would be VERY wise to hier it out to a TV Repair shop.

Another option if you don't want to resolder yourself is to send it out. i used a shop that i found on the web and it worked perfectly. Mailed it to them and they turned around and got it back with my vehicle's correct milage.

Well I have done plenty of soldering but I never done any circuit boards or anything like that... I can definitely take a look when I get it and see if I can do it myself, If not Ill have someone do it for me... When I get the replacement cluster I will plug it in the way it is and make sure everything works, If all good ill take care of the IC chip to keep my mileage...
