Default column lock

Needing advice on my 97 m6 which I have owned for 11 years now. Wanting to be proactive what should I do to prevent future problems with the column lock mechanism. The car has 104k miles presently and the column lock still works as intended, I will say I had one instance in 11 years where I had to jerk the steering wheel hard against the stops to get it to unlock. Should I be proactive or leave something that is working alone? Any advise will be appreciated.

Installing the LMC5 isn't difficult but it ISNT a 2 min job. When you get it, take the good part of a Sat morning and INSTALL IT.

What are you going to do when you are on the road away from home and have to be at a specific place at a specific time and the column lock decided that its going to fail and NOT unlock?????

I have already ordered the LMC5 and planning to install it, even thou the pull key message has not reappeared the last three weeks, and I have used the car about 3 to 4 times a week. Just curious as to what else can trigger the pull key message besides the column lock, any insight? Thanks for your advise.

I have one last question about the LMC5, my car is a 97 m6, does the LMC5 prevent the steering wheel from locking after installing, or does it just prevent the pull key message.

When you install ANY of the Column Lock By Pass modules, it prevents the column from ever locking again.

IF,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Your car ever had the GM recall done, you should have had the modified locking plate installed during that recall that prevented the lock from locking the wheel. If your wheel still locks, you do not have the recall done or the full recall accomplished.

The lock motor must still work because the installation of the locking device requires the lock motor to RETRACT the lock pin and once its retracted the bypass is installed and that electronically simulates the lock motor working.

Mine worked great on a Friday, Monday morning came and guess what? Took me 30 minutes to install, no more problems.

Thanks to all for your knowledge on this subject, as stated my car is a 97 m6 c5, and I purchased in 2006. I am pretty sure that it has not had any of the factory recalls dealing with the column lock done, I have two GM campaign stickers on the inner fender well they are 97040 and 97031, can someone tell me what those two were for. I have already ordered the LMC5, just in case I need it, but I am on the fence about defeating a theft deterrent feature that is presently still working. I know, I know that I may be stranded if it fails sometime in the future. Again thanks for all your help on this subject.

Glad you're a gamblin man. Nothing like being stuck in a dark strange place with no cell phone at midnight.

I put in a LMC5 as soon as I bought my car. I had enough to worry about driving on 11 year old tires for a month. .
