I just got my z06 ready for the winter and thought that I would try a battery tender to maintain the battery for the winter. The only unit I could find locally was one made by autometer. After hooking it up it lasted a few hours than died.I am taking the P.O.S. back in the morning but am considering ordering in the battery tender plus made by deltran.Does anyone here have any experience with the deltran unit?
Pick up a Sears or Fleetfarm battery maintainer (not a trickle charger). It'll run you only about $25 and is virtually identical to the $50-60 maintainers (such as Deltran).

I bought the Deltran unit from Pep Boys last year and had my car on it throughout the winter. I took my car out for a breath of fresh air every 3 weeks on a clean, dry day during that 4 month period.
The Battery Tender worked great, just as it is supposed to, i.e. the cycle went through proper stages before it floated. I had started out with the original Lead/Acid Delco battery but had to have it replaced within about 2 weeks of using the Tender due to it leaking acid (known problem) - GM replaced it with the AGM battery.
This unit works very well and seems to be widely used.
Please note that Battery Tender Tech Support, per their instructions also, does not recommend putting the unit on a battery in a car. I ended up removing mine.
Not disputing your post at all as I didn't read the 'structions.
I've had the BT on my C4 and another on my C5 for months.
Do you know why they reccomend not connecting to the battery in the car??
Electrolyte leakage as the battery becomes fully charged and the level increases????
Spikes into the computer data buss??
I can't think of anything else right now.
I can leave mine sitting for MONTHS with the BT and it'll crank right up.
The BTY is SOOOO much better than a trickle charger.
Trickle chargers left on over a period of months WILL boil the water out of the electrolyte and maim or kill your battery.

They told me they were worried about several things including fumes, but I tend to think it was a liability issue. It is in their instructions though, and made me nervous enough to remove the battery since I wouldn't be driving the car anyway. I put it in the basement and put on the battery tender and did notice you could smell the battery at times.

I remove my battery, also. A battery or maintainer/tender failure, causing a constant charge, would create hydrogen fumes as the battery boiled off. Just safer to have it in an open area, not under a partially closed hood or car cover. Those fumes may well be caustic and damage the vehicle as well, although I'm not sure of that.
