Can cam bearings be replaced without pulling the block out on a 2002 Z06? I'm having a new cam put in and the builder is telling me the cam bearings are worn and wants to pull the motor for a bottom end refresh for an additional $3500. He wasn't sure the bearings can be done with the motor in the car. What say you?
To clarify, he said a few are showing through the first layer. I have not seen them yet, nor have experience with them.
What was done to this car to produce that much wear by 50K? Was it modified, driven hard, crap maintenance? LS's should be pretty stout, and the LS6 is a good block.
The only mods so far are headers. My guess is the previous owner drove out a bit hard. I have put put 15k on it myself.
3500 is not an option right now. So back to my original question, can the bearings be changed without pulling the motor?
He did say he is willing to put it back together as is and I well likely be fine for a while yet, I'm not racing or driving hard really. But he is recommending the bottom end refresh. If they can be replaced without pulling the block, I would go that route but he is looking into that. I'm hoping someone here can confirm or deny that is possible.
Ok, so after looking through a bunch of threads it seems as if some copper showing is normal on these motors?
copper showing isnt exactly normal. if your oil pressure was good before. you will probably be ok to put it back together as it is. to much bearing clearance will cause low oil pressure. then you’ll have more problems.
