Yesterday my 99 6-spd was on the lift and the mechanic pointed out that it had a 3.43 in it. What gears came in the 6-spd? I can't imagine going with anyhting taller, as I have to shift around 40mph to get second. I would think shifting earlier would be a pain....
I am considering a Forced induction, and I think 3.43's would be perfect if not a little tall for it...
3.42's are in your car. I have switched to 3.73's and like the results. You can also get 3.90's and 4.10's now too. If you are going with forced induction I would stay with the 3.90 3.73 or the 3.42's.

one does not vary away from the factory rear axle ratio based on that criteria. It would be for racing; and how to maximize the engine RPM for the specific racing task (whether it be 1/4 mile drags, or autocross).
If you do not race; I agree then, why would you want anything else than what came with the car.

C5's come with either 3.42 or 3.23's. I know have 4.10 which are awesome. I also loved my 3.73's. The 3.42 would be ideal for forced induction but I wouldn't count out the 3.73 either. Just my .02
As far as shifting at what speed goes, someone asked me recently so I did a very informal and unscientific test, trying not to kill myself while reading the tach and the HUD at the same time on the highway. With my 3.73's, here's what I can extrapolate as the speed of the car at 6k RPM in the first four gears:
