How much are you guys paying for 3.42 gears and labor to intall them? I have a 99 A4 with 3.15s and want 3.42s. I called West Coast Corvettes in Orange County, CA today. They want $895 for the 3.42s (exchange),
$600 to install the gears AND $500 for a new computer, they require it, AND $100 to program the new computer. They claim the Hypertech programmer does not provide enough adjustment to correct the speedometer. These prices seem high. Then I asked them how much LABOR ONLY to change a cam and valve springs...$3300.00!!!
Can anyone recommend a cheaper source for gears, such as take offs, or a place in So Cal to install them? Will the Hypertech fully correct the speedo or not? Thanks.
I'd buy the 3.42's through the C5 Parts For Sale right here on the forum. You could then sell your 3.15's and reduce your cost for the gears by quite a bit.
For installation, talk to Andy Green of A&A Corvette Specialties. He's located in Port Hueneme near Oxnard. You can email him at Andy@AandAcorvette.com or phone him at 805.658.8299
WCC is really getting high on their prices, they charged me $487 the first time and & $725 the second time for a converter and gear change (because I didn't purchase any parts from them on the second change).
You will need someone to reprogram your computer, the HPP will not do it. [b]What do you mean, you need a new computer they require it?? I have the same computer and it has been reprogrammed several times. In fact, I told WCC all I wanted was the ST-3500 installed with the 3.73's, no problem and no computer work. I got Steve Cole at TTS to reprogram my computer.
I had Mike (I think thats his name), at Andy's Auto in Monrovia (626)447-3707 install my cam and valve train package for $450, he does great work. He might install gears, but you will still need to have your computer reprogrammed for cam change and again for a gear change. Reprogramming is not cheap!
The price seems high but the 500$ is probably for the LS1 Edit and not for a new comp, or they swap it out with one pre-programmed for the new gears and you are paying for the license (LS1)
BTW you can go used on the gears save a couple hundy and retain the stock set or sell em..... or even cheaper yet would be to buy the ring and pinion and use your case.
Just for reference we get $350. for this install but we're on the east coast. The 3.42 differential is $849.99 outright (no core needed). Andy at A&A seems to be very popular for installations for the guys in CA.
