I have a '98 with NO codes posted. Warm air although the outside air temp shows 54F. A/C button flashes but does not stay lit. Today it is 80F here in PA. Took the car out up to 50 mph and the outside air temp went up to 62. A/C button still only flashes. Set to auto mode and 73F.
The mode button changes airflow correctly. The system was recharged last July when I bought the car. Should the ambient outside temp reflect the actual outside temp? IOW should it show somewhere around 80F? Does the 62F reading by the sensor indicate a defective sensor?
If the reading is 62F shouldn't the A/C engage anyway? (above 40F). My understanding is that if the compressor is defective the button will flash and no A/C. Also, if the system requires recharging the same thing will happen - flashing button.
I read about 50 posts after searching from 2007 on up to 2012 and some similar some different. The car has 19k on the clock...
you can try to unplug it, clean the connection and plug it back in that may work or there is a reset procedure to get the display to read correctly which you can also try
When the Front Defrost, Rear Defog and fan up buttons are pressed simultaneously.
Updates temperature display instantly.

If the outside air sensor is sending 62F. shouldn't the A/C button stay on, compressor engage, and cool the car?
My air temp sensor was actually plugged up to my under hood light when I bought it. They share the same connector type, and are in about the same area. Genius move on the previous owner's part. haha

Mine didn't have a sensor, so the sensor connector was plugged into the hood lamp harness. Definitely brilliant.
I just reached right down and had easy access, but I've got a K&N air filter that takes up a lot less space than the stock setup. Not sure what access would be like stock.
My cable and connector were in plain sight -- connected incorrectly, as noted above, but easy to reach from under the hood, on the R/H side of the radiator.

Just to be clear, for R/H side of radiator you mean driver's side standing in front of the car...
I just got the part late today. Gotta cut an acre of grass, trim, etc.
Updates asap...
Replaced the sensor today with an AC Delco new sensor. The connector was very clean and not corroded. The outside temp reading was 54F. when I started the car and never changed. Took the car out up to 50 mph and the display remained at 54F. Pressing the A/C button gets 3-4 flashes and off. No cold air at all. Tried pressing the front defrost, rear defrost, and fan up simultaneously and no change in the outside temp display, still reads 54F. NO CODES SET...
