Default How hard is it to replace the cruise control?

My cruise control is gradually failing. It refuses to work until I've been on the road for at least an hour, if it decides to work at all. I've been over the car and checked all the ground straps. Fuse is OK. I was going to check the connections to the cruise control module but I don't know where that is on the car.

Did you check the fuse panel in the footwell on the passenger side?
The fuse for the CC is #20
The most common repair for this condition is to readjust your brake switches at your pedal assembly.

Simply remove the lower black panel under the steering wheel.
Look up at the 2 switches attached to your brake pedal, yes there are 2.
Push them towards the FRONT of the vehicle.
You will hear a rapid click from both and the pedal will move.
Then, USING ONLY 2 FINGERS, pull up on the brake pedal lightly until you hear them click into the correct position.

Road test it and I think you will be just fine.

But just in case, the throttle control module which is attached to the pcm is behind the passenger front wheel. Remove the panel in the wheel well to access.

Thanks, that sounds like the answer, since the problem is intermittent. Much appreciated!

SG Lou is SPOT ON with the solution!! Adjust the brake and or clutch peddle switches.

You can also test to see if the switches are the issue by using your foot and pulling UP on the peddles when it doesn't work and then re try to use it. If it works, you found the issue.

YES,,, the TAC module controls and contains ALL of the cruise control functions.

On mine, the clutch pedal switch acted up. The contacts were closing but were dirty and not connecting. Adjusting it moves the contacts which would make it work again.

YEP! Our cars are getting OLD and all switch/relay contacts should be scrutinized for resistance when closed & open. If the contact are dirty/carboned up, they will adversely effect circuit operation.

Especially the ignition switch as it is a well known issue....

Actually did that on the way home yesterday after Lou mentioned pulling on the brake pedal and sure enough, the cruise started working. Didn't help this morning, though. Guess I'll have to get under there like Lou said and do a little more adjusting by hand.

Not the pedal switches. Once I'm able to get the cruise to engage, the resume/accel and disengage work fine. It's just hard to get the cruise to come on.

Next task will be to replace the turn signal stalk to see if that's the problem. I was amazed to see that a new turn signal stalk is $190. Managed to get a returned open box piece for $50, hopefully that will fix the problem.
