Alright I am thinking about doing a little preventive service and looking to maybe replace the bushings on the cable. But rather than pull every thing apart was curious as too which end is the most likely to go bad first, shifter or trans end? The way it looks the trans end would be a little easier to get to, maybe? If I remember right if they are white and yellow they need to be replaced, but if they are black they are good to go? Help me if that is true. Thanks in advance for all the opinions, and the knowledge that I have garnished from everyone! 2002 C5 vert.
Definitely correct - the trans end is the easier. You are also correct in that many consider the dark colored bushings to be much more durable.
Here's a link that may prove helpful. Includes information, manual diagrams and other links. https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...ift-cable.html
I think I'd be prone to try and change both.
Best wishes with this!
Yep, change both of them. Be careful when changing them. The cable does not bend very far at the ends. The plastic ends are brittle. If you bend too far they will break and you will have to replace the entire cable. That is a PITA. Don't ask how I know.
At the transmission end I found it easier to remove the selector lever from the transmission. Then you can easily pop the nipple into the new bushing just by squeezing with pliers. Then replace the lever on the transmission. Good luck.
Well I just got around to checking the bushing on the transmission and it was the black (dark) one. I was able to wiggle it a little but it was completely intact on the lever, but it had a "little" play in it around the pin on the lever (I would think that it would need some and be completely normal to have a little). By just looking by a "nuwbe" it looked just fine, not cracked at all or anything else that I could see. I don't like fixing something just for the sake of it but definitely want to fix if needed. Curious which bushing deteriorates the worst? By the way just about 28500 miles and been inside most of the time. Thanks for ALL of the information that I have gotten from all of the esteemed forum members!!
The good bushings are a dark grey, I would leave them be, if you really want, try and pull the cable gingerly and if it does not pop off, leave it alone.
The white/yellow bushings were crap and for sure should be replaced, they deteriorate over time, the plastic breaks down and when one side goes, the other side is not far behind.
