many say it is, side by side I can't see any difference ??? we have 2 C5 manuals and a C6 Z06 and have MGW's in one C5 and the C6 when we get into the stock C5 it's like driving a truck !!!
My 2003 ZO6 had a C6 shifter in it when I purchased it. I kept hitting 5th gear instead of 3rd going into turn 6 at Road Atlanta. After I installed the MGW, I have never missed a shift. Sometimes, at a traffic light, I accidently downshift into third instead of first because it is sprung that way. I'll sacrifice that anyday to get track reliability.
Good luck.

I'm debating changing out my stock shifter, thanks for the review.
Once you get past the obvious of dumping the C5's truck like shift ****, a lot of the C5 vs. C6 issues are due to comparing a high mileage shifter which has some slop in the works with a new "tight" unit. I've had them both apart - really apart. No difference internally. I ran a cut down C6 shifter for a while, and decided that the shift **** ended up too far back for me, due to the crank in the lever, so took my old C5 shifter, ran a die down all the way to the insulator, then cut it to suit a Hurst shift ****. Plus, I took the play out of the internals while I had it apart. Really no difference in shift feel at all after that. The insulator, by the way is larger and more substantial on the C5 than the C6. What with a lighter lower box on the C6, I guess the cost savings gang were in there.
I have the C6 shifter in mine. And I think it's a huge improvement over the stock shifter.
i put a c6 shifter in mine
The 5 **** sits higher and further forward than the 6 or 7, so after driving my 7 for a while, I’d reach for the **** in the 5 ... and miss.
Put the 6 shifter in, and the problem went away.
Effort is about the same, but the 6 shifter has much better ergonomics.
Other than getting the 5 **** off, the install is relatively easy.
The hardest part is getting the correct combination of shifter parts - If you do not acquire a complete set, be aware GM changed the design on the C6 shifter in mid 2008 - the ****, screw, and boot are not interchangeable between pre and post change styles.
It is also complicated by multiple part number supercessions, and that the C5, 6, and 7 shifter box all have the same part number, so if you go to a dealer, they will ask for the serial number of the C6 to get the “right” shifter.
I believe one of the forum vendors sells a complete unit - shifter, ****, and boot for a very reasonable price.
Lots of good reviews on the factory box rebuild below as another option to rebuild your box. It may be worth taking a look at. I upgraded to a C6 shifter and it's definitely an improvement over the C5. I also used a solid heavy shift **** at the suggestion of another member (you'll need a different **** for the C6 shifter anyway - pic below) and it took it up another notch. Proper adjustment is key to any shifter working well.

I swapped mine out when the C6 first came out. I had tried aftermarket and that didn't last a week before I yanked it out. C6 has been in for years and I find it much better than the C5 shifter.
