I'm new to this forum. Please excuse my rookieness. I've searched the forum for this problem, but I cannot find it.
I have an intermittent issue with my '03. I will start it and it runs fine. Let's say I drive to the store. Come back out....try to start it. It cranks, but never fires, or it runs rough and when I push the gas pedal it seems to just bog down. No power, tac won't go over 2k no matter how much gas I give it. Barely runs and sometimes dies.
Once it actually happened while i was driving. No power...sputtering... then died. Try to restart it... just cranks....no firing.
At times it runs fine for a month. Then all the sudden the issue starts. Lately it has been more often and I'm afraid to drive it anywhere.
I have tried to trouble shoot it as a battery issue. Had my battery tested...charged by a battery shop. Made sure it was charged, and securely fastened regarding pos/neg terminals. No love.
The only thing that seems to get it out of this funky state is to removed the pos/neg terminals...then reconnect. But this only works some of the time.
I understand the batter sending enough volts to the computer is important, and therefore, when i'm not using it, i always disconnect the battery so it's not draining while sitting for a week or what ever. Never the less, I have charged the battery, installed, and had this issue. I'm using an Exide Edge AGM.
Even though the check engine light never comes on, should I be looking for codes anyway?
Hoping I described the issue in a way that it's understood.

I would check the codes, you will find how to retrieve codes on this site. I would also check all your positive battery connections and ground points paying attention to the main ground cable above the starter and the ground cable on the driver's side cylinder head.

Try to get some codes first if you can...scan data really helps in the diagnosis...could be a handful of things...maybe fuel delivery ??...I'd probably do a quick check for spark at a coil and for injector pulse when it acts up...if good and you can get your hands on a fuel pressure gauge I'd check that next...when was the fuel filter changed last ???...could even be a bad crank sensor on its way out (check for Tach movement during cranking).
Yea, The DTCs are very important. More important is for you to retrieve them when the issue actually happens and even more important is for you to retrieve them before you turn off the ignition. If you have messages in the DIC,, Just press reset until the messages clear and you can normally enter the DTC reading routine using the DIC.
When the issue happens, do you see any messages in the DIC and do you loose any functionality on any of the gages and or door functions??
List any and ALL of the DTCs that pop up. If you read the DTCs prior to the issue and there are a ton of old DTCs, its just best to clear them as not to complicate the troubleshooting efforts.

As members here have posted the C5 has it's own code reader built in, I would get my money back on that code reader. Do a internet search on c5 DIC operation.
ohhhhhhhh Thank you !!!! well hell. i want a reader for my other ride anyway, but good to know !!
I have a Blue Driver that I keep plugged into my 2016 4 Runner...for $100.00 it's a pretty powerful tool and has a lot of features of many scan tools that cost 3-4 times as much...you download their App (iPhone or Android) to use it !!
