Thought I would give an update here. The dealer put in a fourth replacement starter (reman from gm). The issue is now fixed. Shims weren’t needed. Thanks for all the suggestions.
Thanks for the update, something I forgot to mention is sometimes it's best to send your starter to somebody who will rebuild it for you, that way your assured that it will fit correctly. Hope your starter problems are behind you for a long time.
That zinging sound is actually the starter drive, sometimes referred to as the Bendix. That zinging sound is not normal, I replaced my starter about three years ago because of problems with the solenoid, and bought a Bosh starter with the two long mounting bolts and haven't had problems since.

The zinging noise typically points to an incomplete disengagement by the bendix drive of your starter motor. It's not an uncommon problem at all (shimming starters is most certainly a thing). So I'm a little surprised that your shop doesn't know this.
