Hi guys, I'm planning on replacing my Rear Main Seal when I do my clutch in a few weeks. My question is what type is better in terms of installation, The seal installed in the cover or the seal by itself?
I'm planning on getting the Mr. Gasket alignment tool part LSRC1. Any comments on the tool?

personally I would just get the seal and the rear cover alignment tool from saccity corvette, not worth the risk of a leak in my opinion and having to do all that work again over a few bucks
I have the Mr gasket tool that you mention, works just fine, that one or the sac ciry one is fine. No special instructions other than I would take the cover off if your doing it this way and clean any old sealant off and use the install tool to realign cover and apply some permatex to the bottom corners where the cover meets the bottom. Then tighten the bottom 2 bolts down a bit at first before you star pattern torque everything else. Did mine this way and no leaks
I just did this also, I replaced the whole cover, the one pictured is a upgraded version the bolts are bigger. The new design is supposed to cut down on leaking from the cover itself. Good luck, getting the bellhousing off and on is a pain. My only tip is use a length of rubber hose to start the bolts back in

i think it depends on what clutch you install whether or not you have to remove the bellhousing. I couldnt get the clutch in for the life of me when i did mine so i had to pull it off. even tried with just the bottom portion off and it wouldnt fit in there. Monster LT1S and flywheel combo.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I was under the impression that the alignment tool wasn't needed if your only replacing just the seal ?
If the rear cover is removed the yes one would be needed but if the cover isn't removed the alignment should be correct ?
I did the rear cover on mine 3 years ago because the cover itself was leaking. The genuine GM part was only $45 from amazon and required no special tool to install. The big pain was getting to it. While you have it apart you might consider looking at the couplers in the torque tube. I didn't and had to pull it again 2 years later to replace the couplers and bearings. It would have been much easier to do it all at once. Good luck with your project.
