Broke my output shaft!!!!!!
I haven't had any luck finding a passenger side shaft. Has anyone else found one?
Also, if you're trying to get GM to warranty this, you better not tell them you were at a dragstrip! I would go with something like "I floored it from a stoplight, and it just broke!! "
Ed
GM already knows I was at the strip. I leveled with my dealer, and they leveled with their Rep, so that nobody gets in trouble. I will be meeting with the Rep on Dec 2 to resolve the "who pays" issue. Currently, GM has offered to split it with me. [WTF is *split*? Is if my fault or their fault, period.] I intend to convince them to pay it all, of course. My dealer backs me on this.
Please see this thread: http://forums.corvetteforum.com/zerothread?id=431012
In it, I mention you (and LPE), and how a right side shaft currently isn't made by the aftermarket, and thus it shouldn't have been a "weak link" for me. I plan to point out to the Rep the LPE opinion on this issue (i.e.- it's the left side that breaks, not the right like mine did). Pay for it, GM!!
Again, thanks for looking into this. I'm sure there are many others out there who are rethinking the "bulletproof" design of these differentials, and will maybe go with aftermarket shafts BEFORE they get stranded on a starting line somewhere.....
Good luck with all that...
BTW - I agree that your part should not have broken. But that's not the point... ;)

What is the point? I had no choice but to level with my dealer, since about half of their service department is at MIR on any given weekend, they know I'm a chronic drag racer, and the towing company is "long time tight" with the dealer. Blowing smoke up their azz would have gotten me *zero*, so I made the correct decision.
And they then had to make a decision...lie for me and risk problems with their Rep who THEY have to live with everyday, or put the cards on the table and back me up. They helped another customer who melted his F-bod on nitrous by getting GM to pick up half....and that was CLEARLY outside the norm! That same guy totally shelled his diff, and they covered that. They've also replaced a lot of blue flywheels, again going to bat for their customers against the Rep. So, I have to believe that they'll help me. I'm a very good customer, as I've brought them many other customers. And the GM is an old friend...I actually trust him, if you can believe it.
GM has already offered to pay half, with no discussions and sight unseen. If they were playing hardball, they would have already told me to pound sand and to write them a check for $1400. AND cancel my warranty!
So, there you have it. What would you have done different?
And I can't be concerned about all the other guys who have hammered their cars through repeated blasts down the dragstrip, with heads, cams and strokers, spraying, running tires, etc. and then having GM turn them down. After all, GM is not a sponsor!!
So, you are right --I'll be lucky if GM eats the whole cost. But I doubt that action on their part will open the floodgates for the guys I've described above. But, I've got to prepare for my own battle and expect a good outcome. Or should I roll over and pay half?
Oh, and the point, once again, is that I don't think GM will pay. That's all. Not that they shouldn't. Not that it's yours or their fault. Just that they won't - in my opinion. Good luck.
No worries...and I know you weren't flaming! :D And, I'm sure you WANT me to get a freebie on this. :yesnod:
I actually just wanted to explain the situation fully, in case anyone else had some insight or advice, and to explain why I took the "stupid" path of telling my dealer. And, I do want to defend my dealer...they deserve it. And I didn't really volunteer.....they got the tow bill and it said *From MIR*, and they asked me point blank. Concocting a story that it broke in the parking lot wasn't going to work! :nonod:
But GM? They've been pretty inconsistent with their warranty policy, especially with drivetrain problems (and column lock!! ) They go anywhere from "no pay" to *halvsies* to "full pay", all on the same issue.
So, you might be right and I'll have to pay half, but my dealer said the Rep is a reasonable guy who wants to help good customers. So we'll see.
Thanks for you input.
So, if I'm halfway there, am I actually ahead? :)
I'll keep you posted after Dec 2nd.

Sounds like you're headed in the right direction, good luck with your case.
I'm still waiting on 3 or 4 people to call me and order their shafts, your fellow members that already called would really like to get their shafts. I will go through the orders, and e-mail the people who said they wanted one, but haven't called yet. Thanks,
Ed
