i looked at at an 01’ c5 today, there are a lot of things I liked about the car, but a few things made me question it....
The first this is the car car starts and runs ok, but when I shut it off, it acts like it wants to diesel. It also smells like it’s running rich.
The second is that it doesn’t return to idle quickly, when you lift, it’s like it goes 1.5k, than back to idle. It also feels like it’s ldleung rougher than it should.
Rough idle could be a loose connection between the air filter and intake manifold. Unmetered air can cause that.
Is the car a manual or automatic? If manual, did you have the clutch pedal depressed on shutdown? If not, they make a strange sound during shutdown. It has to do with the clutch being up front and the tranny in the rear.
Does the car still have the catalytic converters? Could account for the fuel smell.
I don't recall the issue with the hanging idle. Someone will likely chime in.
The issue that I had with the car was not so much a noise, but when I shut it off, the engine acts like it wants to keep running. Almost like a 70s v8 when you **** it down.
It it doesn’t have have cat pipes, so that explains the rich fuel smell.
If you hear a clunking noise, its just the drive line still spinning. I always depress the clutch when i turn off my motor. It eliminates the noise after turning off the car.
Sounds like someone built it to run hard, ran into a problem and dumped it imo. Or someone who worked on it shouldnt have been.
There is no reason why it should ever sound like its dieseling, not normal. Lots of these for sale no need to settle
I would tend to agree. If you buy someone else's project - either buy one that works well or buy one real cheap. Dieseling after shutdown is so far out of my wheelhouse that I wouldn't look twice.
Running rich combined with the dieseling would make me think you have a leaky injector or injectors...with a low compression cylinder if you can get a cylinder leak down check you can figure out if it’s a lower or upper end issue..if you can’t get it for a REAL good price I’d pass !!
i think I’m going to pass on this car. If I was a bit more knowledgeable about ls engines, I’d feel more comfortable, but I just don’t know enough to make a good call. The issues it has combined with the miles (148k) makes me nervous.
i made an offer of $8k, but they would only come down to $8.4, they are asking $10.9k. Honestly, I feel like $8k was a stretch, and I’m sorta glad they turned me down

just for reference, 148k is nothing. I daily my 04z and it has 212k on it. As long as you stay on top of the maintenance (like you should with any car), motor should be good. However...things do happen you can't predict.

GOOD CALL! Trust your gut. This is not a car you need. It is one you want. Wait until you find a deal that feels right. You'll know when you've found the right one.
Mileage isn't as big a concern as upkeep. If the car is well maintained, it has a good chance of a long life. There are plenty of examples of C5s with more than 200k miles and still going strong.
