Greetings, I'm usually over in the C6 section, I'm asking this for a friend. He just got an '02 Coupe with about 23K miles on it. We were going over his car tonight and I noticed the HB wobbling. Now I know the C6 is infamous for bad HB's, had mine on my 05' replaced with an ATI and ARP bolt, one of my first mods. My question, is the C5 HB also a problem within the generation, should he be thinking about a replacement down the road? Thanks in advance...
YES, the C5 stock HB is junk. I had 3 installed and all failed under warranty. I finally got the service manager to allow me to buy an ATI and ARP bolt and they installed it for free. Go with the ATI and ARP bolt and you will not have to worry about a HB problem again. Even if the ATI would fail you can rebuild it and not have all the hassle of the OEM replacement.
I'm going to replace HB my this coming week. My only question concerns the Powerbond PB1117SS. I want to go with this one for the piece of mind and longevity (at least I suppose so) but the specs say the diameter is 7.2" ..... so is this an "under drive" HB ??
If so I'll probably go with Powerbond PB1117N at 7.52" (and might do it anyway). Comments please.
For my stock 2002 convertible (with Corsa exhaust and no plans mod), the basic PowerBond seems the way to go. The question I have is why everyone says the ARP bolt so important? I love ARP fasteners, but from what I understand the harmonic balancer is an interference fit to the crank and the bolt just keeps it from walking forward. I see the ARP is re-usable, but I don't plan to be doing this again, and even if I did, I could buy 6 stock bolts for that price.
Thanks!
Doug
