Greetings, I'm usually over in the C6 section, I'm asking this for a friend. He just got an '02 Coupe with about 23K miles on it. We were going over his car tonight and I noticed the HB wobbling. Now I know the C6 is infamous for bad HB's, had mine on my 05' replaced with an ATI and ARP bolt, one of my first mods. My question, is the C5 HB also a problem within the generation, should he be thinking about a replacement down the road? Thanks in advance...
O.K., thanks all, I'll pass this info along to him. And $800 for a replacement, not as bad as some of the replacement prices I've seen on the C6's, I've seen upwards of $1200 to replace those. Thanks again...
Tell your friend to look at the ATI Harmonic Balancer. This one seems to be the most reliable. If you go with an OEM, you're going to have the same problem down the road. Also, consider pinning the crank.
That being said there are several options out there that are just as durable that are not of the stock design that are half the cost of an ATI. Putting an ATI on a stock engine is throwing money right into the fire. If your friend has money to burn by all means.
As far as C6s go, well they're newer and generally worth a good bit more so why not have an even higher Corvette Tax for them?
I'm going to go with the Summit Racing Harmonic balancer (race version). This will be my third and hopefully last one. I just changed my belts and tensioner then noticed this.
Powerbond, Summit Racing, Jegs, Pro Products, and a few others sell good quality SFI approved balancers. Can they still fail? possibly, but they are built better and have fail safe designs to meet SFI spec.
I am running the Dayco Powerbond PB1117SS even though there was nothing wrong with my stocker. It was an I was in there already job. I think it was just under 200 bucks shipped.
Dont cheap out on the balancer, or you might just be doing it over again in 3 or 4 years. . Besides, the SS race has a lock ring on the outer sleeve so it cannot come apart. Thats why its SFI approved. I think that in the scheme of things, $260 aint bad.......or get the ATI balancer......Over $400. Now thats race. But ya' know, if I had a supercharger, I think thats the one I would get. A lot of extra stress with one of those things.
I would rather see someone waste 200 dollars instead of 500 dollars if it makes their peace of mind better.
Also, they must have raised the price of the PB1117SS as I paid like 215 for it in January.
Can't see how that gives someone piece of mind...just replacing my 15 year old balancer with a better than stock crap gm balancer gave ME piece of mind...i guess one could get even better piece of mind by buying a new power trane...but in my case not wasting $200 MORE is piece of mind enough for me....the standard powerbond balancer for $70 is much better than gm's pos balancer in my opinion
