Default Guage cluster

Hello I have a 1998 convertible base model 6 speed manual. My gauge cluster is beginning to fail. I took it to a local speedo shop and they advised me to just replace it with a used one and they would do a certification sticker for the door noting that the speedo has been replaced..

Here is my question.. will any 1997-2004 speedo work .. or does it have to be a 1997-1998 only ?

Thank you

I had a 98 and I put a cluster out of a later year, I don't remember exactly what vintage. I know that I did mine because I wanted to put in a HUD and my 98 cluster of did not have all the functions working because it wasn't really an option for that year. By federal law I don't think it's necessary to document the mileage change anymore oh, I think that after their 10 years old it doesn't matter. But you could Google that and find out for sure. I picked up a cluster that was Within about a thousand miles of the truth on the old cluster so I didn't care. That just worked out for me.

I'm pretty sure that is long as you go newer you will be fine with any C5 cluster.

Thank you for the helpful insight, I can find more 2000-04 gauge clusters than I can find 1997-1999 ones. On the ones I have looked at online the back of the units and the electrical plugs look the same but I wasn't sure..

Replaced my 98 cluster with two different newer years clusters, one C5 base and one Z06 cluster, and both worked. just not sure what years each were from. They we both non hud versions into my non hud car. Also had mileage reprogrammed cause i didnt want to have to keep track of it myself.

808_c5, just an FYI, if you changed to the Z06 cluster it is HUD capable. It may not have the switch on the left side to adjust it once the HUD is installed, but it does have the HUD harness connector plug-in. All later '99 through 2004 came with the connector plug-in. This just means you don't have to replace the entire cluster, just add the switch panel.

HUD Adjuster panel...

Good luck... GUSTO

Since it is a different year gauge cluster, the seat belt bulb is in a different spot. You need to open your old cluster and compare and move the out of place bulb on the replacment cluster to the same position you see in the old cluster. I did this to mine and used this video for instructions on open up the cluster https://youtu.be/7OXIkWGf6u0

808 c5,

Thank you for this information and the helpful video link, I got up first thing this morning and took the old cluster apart then removed the new cluster and swapped the air bag light bulb to the same spot as on the old cluster.. And it ended my restless" what the heck did I do wrong" feeling I had all night..

Thank you so much.. and if you are a father I wish you a very Happy Fathers Day!

There is a small IC on the cluster mother board that contains the mileage. Your OEM IC can be removed and easily transplanted into the new cluster and that way you would have the same correct mileage.

You would need to find someone with the proper soldering equipment (Hot Air station and the proper flux) to accomplish it. Any TV / Radio repair place could do it for you rather inexpensively.
