new wheel "runout"
I'm planning to purchase new wheels for the '98. Reading posts on the forums, some members state that they had checked "runout" on the new wheels that they purchased and found them defective. I don't know what "runout" is but suspect that it's the wheel being out of round. How does one have wheel "runout" checked?

"Run out" can mean either that the wheel has a "wobble" when spun, i.e. it's effectively very slightly buckled (called lateral run out), or as you say, it can mean it's slightly out of round - radial runout. It pretty much takes the wheel to be mounted (or on a balancer) then get spun. You may be able to see the runout if it's excessive. The "proper" way to check it is with a machinist's dial indicator. My best shot would be that any more than .060" (approx 1/16") run out of either type would be unacceptable.

Just take the new rims to a tire store and have them put the bare rims on the balance machine. When they spin it up, you can usually see any really abnormal run out in either direction. Yes, a dial indicator is the best way to see if there is any down to a nats *** but IMHO, you are really looking for gross abnormal runout.
