Dunno about the clunk, but the rattle could be something in your blower motor. Blower is down near the glovebox, not really hard to get it out, just hell on your back.
Pull the blower motor out and inspect the squirrel cage rotor for trash. Also put your hand inside the air box and feel for the evaporator coil and make sure that there isn't any trash or lint in there.
While the blower is out,, operate the AC and see if you still hear the noise (CLUNK)
Two three things happen when you turn the AC ON. The compressor clutch engages, the blower motor turns on and the Air Box Damper doors get vacuum to position them selves to the correct settings and move.
The clunk could be any of the three or even something I have failed to mention.
