Next week I will have my older Goodyear run flat tires replaced with non run flat tires. The previous owner put on C5 Z06 chrome rims, which I really like. He had the TPMS function turned off in the BCM. I purchased new Schrader TPMS sensors that will be installed on the rims with the new tires. My mechanic has a GM Tech II and will reprogram the TPMS function in the BCM to activate it again. Will he be able to activate the sensors with the Tech II or will we need a magnet to activate the sensors?
You need a MAGNET to trick the sensors into thinking they are rotating. The reed switch in side the sensor requires a magnet to make it make contact to turn the sensor on.
If you look at how the sensor body sits in the rim, you will notice that the magnet should be placed on the inside of the rim barrel just inboard of the stem for best activation contact.
Make sure that the stem seals are lightly lubed with some dielectric grease and the feral nut is torqued to the proper spec in INCH POUNDS. * 62 lb-in torque, which is only about 5 lb-ft (i.e., very little torque!! )
