I have a oil leak the bolt to the right above the oil filter was the highest point on the engine that i can find oil.
any suggestions on where my leak could be coming from?
could it be from the object right above the filter that has the 2 bolts?
any input would help, thanks in advance.
If that is all it is I wouldn't about it unless it may be dripping...DON'T freak out !!...spray some Brake Kleen around that area and wipe it down...see what comes back !!...in the Airline Industry our jet engines have more leaks than yours...LOL !!!
WARNING! If you retorque the oil pan bolts to the factory spec, there is a very high possibility that you will STRIP OUT the bolts that screw into the block that go through the front and rear cover assembly. The problem is, the threads are oil contaminated and that causes the felt torque to be less than is actually being applied to the bolts.
Decrease the torque value to a value for oil lubricated threads for the size threads that are used for those fasteners. There are only four that really strip easily.
I agree,, Wipe down the entire area and run the engine and monitor for any oil that runs down from the back of the block. Most likely a leak from the Oil Pressure Sensor on the top of the engine block drivers side behind the intake manifold. You can see it with a mirror and a flashlight. Very common issue. Unless you have a puddle of oil under that car after sitting, just drive it like you stole it!
Some C5s have a ONE PIECE Oil Pan. (early C5s) and some have a TWO PIECE pan Late C5s. I don't know the exact date of the crossover. I know 2000-2004 have the two piece pans.
The part in the picture above is the upper oil pan section. The part that is resting on the ground would have the removable lower pan if it had that option.
NOTE, If you have a TWO PIECE PAN, removing the lower oil pan will NOT let you see any of the engines crank or internals to the engine. Just the pick up tube and some oil baffles.
You should see a bolt head something like this. The pic does have a relocated oil pressure or temp sensor for a swap, best I could find on a quick search.
My 2005 has the same oil smell with open air A/C intake open , the engine and manifold is spotless under the hood, but under the engine, garage mat catches quite a bit , center to rear of engine.
203,400 miles, runs great, I’ve had it since ‘09….
Pretty regular mechanic says around $800.,,does that sound right?
you can see the manifold is spotless….
