Damn, Brother!! That's the rear bearing side bolt. Once the rear main bearing is properly torqued, that bolt is installed and torqued for added rear main bearing lower block support. Yes, its supposed to have a special bolt in that hole. Pull one of the OTHER bolts out and get another one just like it from the dealer.

You can see it installed in this picture LINK ATTACHED:

Do the other holes in the same area on the block have bolts in the holes????????????

Check out this link and you can see where they fit into the actual main bearings. The LS engines have a DEEP block and that allows the the main bearing to have extra support in that area:

Its called a side main cap bolt:

Please update us on the status of the other bolts and if you find the correct bolt. Its probably a standard GM Metric bolt but, I have never needed to do anything with all the engines that I have worked on.

I have heard that they are notorious for vibrating lose and falling out. I would put a little blue loctite on the new one.

Yes, I saw that also,, Looks like he has more than one thats missing,, That's why I recommended that he check the others. My guess, someone's been in the engine before. Hope he gets back to us on an UP-DATE.

Hmmmmm, It's rusty. I don't think that's a Vette motor.

Looks like a crusty ole 5.3 maybe?

Yep!!! The RUST confirms that its an iron block!!
Aluminum doesn't rust and the LS block isn't painted..
