My son pulled my car out of garage to wash it(1998 C5 Automatic) put the car in park and it kept pulling forward he cut the car off and now it will not start.
It seems to be a safety switch malfunction no matter what gear its put in the car still rolls. Has anyone come across or know what this could be.
The shift cable is NOT properly moving the PRNDL Selector switch on the side of the A4. If the shifter is working peoperly, when park is selected, it engage a MECHANICAL TOOTHED STOP that the Parking pawl LOCKS the drive train when it engages the toothed wheel. NO WAY, it can roll if that's working properly.
Unless its in P or N, it shouldn't start. The only thing the safety switch does is:
1. Prevent you from starting it unless you are in P or N
2. Prevents the car from starting if all the cars security requirements are met.
The "Safety Switch" is called the Theft Deterrent Relay and its in the passengers foot well above the BCM on the fire wall. The PRNDL selector switch is on the drivers side of the A4 Transmission along with the shift cable and the small plastic connector that the cable connects to on that switch/sensor. .
