Hi guys, my 1st question since joining the forum; I have an intermittent squeal (does sound like belt slip), but could it be a shot water pump also?
I'm not losing any water/fluid in the system, but it does seem to get hot very easily from a quick blast around town, (not much air flow) & the squeal which is usually on start up has now started occurring at any time, so can the "pumping" ability gradually reduce, or would it just go out?
I know it's no big deal to replace the pump, but if l don't have to, then l don't want to>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>ie; if it works, don't mend it theory!!
You are correct in that the pump is a easy and cheap part to replace and the belt is as well. Not knowing the miles on the pump or belt I would suggest just changing them both out. My 1999 C5 had a similar issue and before I know it the coolant leaked out and destroyed the belt and it shredded the hood liner. If I had just replaced them both it would have been a less costly fix. Good luck!
I just had a belt squeal issue on my '99. I changed the belts and tensioner with no luck. It ended up being a very slight wobble in my Harmonic balancer. I replaced it with a Dayco Powerbond balancer, new Timken seal and OEM GM bolt. While it was apart, I replaced the water pump with a new Gates unit. My thought was to do it all at once...
