Just bought my C7 a couple days ago and will definitely replace the shifter. My other ride is my 2008 G8 GT. I swapped trannies for a TR6060 and installed an MGW short throw flat stick and I absolutely love it. Initially the shift to reverse took a lot of side pressure but it is getting better. Enough pressure that my wife can't really do it. But I love the firm shifts that click into gear. NO slop. Compared to the G8, my Z51 feels like the shifter is connected to a rubber band. I'm just used to the MGW unit. I love them and will definitely order it.

Me? I chose the "blue light special" option, after trying a couple alternatives - a cut down C5 lever with a different **** on a rebuilt box. Shifts are shorter throw but with minimal extra effort, and the C5's "truck like" shift **** is thankfully no more.

By the way, some people report across-the-gate "slop" with the standard set up. That's because there is slop in the transmission itself - not in the shift mechanism. Wiggle the lever around with the trim removed and you can see what goes on.
Agreed, if possible try different options. The Z06 lower box has solid bushings attaching it to the torque tube in place of the rubber bushings in base models which in my opinion makes the lower box a little less of a priority.

Shifters are very much an individual preference thing.

I would also Google Froggy C5 shifter alignment and you should find youtube videos of aligning the shifter rod and lower box.

Steve @ RSD modifies a C6Z shifter with a shorter throw for a decent price & i've loved mine for 9yrs.
install was easy - worst part was getting the demon key out, and i even put the C5 **** back on.

I just put the MGW in my car last week. Took me about 30 minutes or so. Very easy to do. Much better than the stock shifter.

When I purchased my Vette in 2011, the guy who owned it before me installed a C6 shifter. I kept the **** and ditched the rest and replaced it with an MGW. After this mod, I never missed a shift while on track. I don't know why I'm keeping the old C6 box. Going back to the C6 shifter would be like tracking down my ex-wife and remarrying her. YYYYuuuuuuck.

If it takes alot of pressure to go into reverse your reverse solinoid may not be working. If it's stuck "on" then it will take alot of pressure to overcome the detent but you can still get it into reverse.

When I put mine back together, I replaced the GM Torx bolts with conventional bolts and steel washers that squash the old rubber bushings to the point that there is zero movement. That and a little judicious metal removal on the normally riveted top plate tightened everything up.

I have searched but I can't get a definitive answer. Do I need a gasket between the lower box and the shifter? Or can I just install it metal to metal. The old thin gasket disintegrated upon removal.

It comes with new gasket, everything you need is in the box.

MGW is great but you also might wanna check out CORE shifters. I have one in my 04 and its just as good as the MGW i had in my 02. Its also a bit cheaper and available with the Hurst handle/ball setup that other shifters cant use.
