It is on my 2001 as well and I believe it is common. I purchased a little pad a that goes in the bottom of the console and it helped a lot reducing the heat in my console.

It's normal. Insulators are for sale on the forum. I decided I don't need them because it's not that bad.
Good luck!

Very normal. My console would get VERY warm where I would rest my right knee against while driving. Recently, I did the entire console and cabin with Dynamat. That stuff is worth every penny. I don’t feel any heat from the drivetrain anymore.

For sure next time I have my console off or get in the right mood I'm going to do some insulation in that whole area. I put a little pad in the console and it help a little, very little.

Best cure for the "hot tunnel" is pulling center console out and dynamat the whole thing. Greatly reduces that heat which is nice in the hot summer.

I dynamatted the whole console and the interior as well for insulation. Not a bad job in nice weather. The console would get too hot to put your arm
on it.

I used Frost King Heat Duct stick on insulation and some foil covered bubble wrap. Did the entire interior on my 02 Z. Reduced the road noise a LOT and it also significantly reduced the heat in the interior. Especially in and on the tunnel/console!

YES, the console and the storage compartment can get very hot. Don't store any chocolate bars in there! LOL!!

One other thing to consider is adding the Elite Engineering 1/4" Thick Aluminum Ceramic Coated Tunnel Plate WITH Thermal-Abs. It's an excellent item to add both chassis stiffening and significant heat shielding to reduce the amount of heat transfer from the exhaust. I added it to my 2000 FRC shortly after purchasing it in '04, and noticed immediately, additional chassis stiffness and less heat in the center console area.

Good luck... GUSTO

Very common...I bought one of those insulators and it worked perfectly. Look for them in the general section. The manufacturer has a post on the first page.
