Default Installing engine through the top...

Installing my engine through the top. Has anyone done this WITH the heads already on ? Any complications in doing it this way rather than just installing it just as a short block and then putting heads ?
-Thanks

From what have found out recently pulling my engine from the top (without the heads) the oil pan contacting the subframe was the biggest issue. I ended up just removing the subframe. But if you were to leave the subframe on you would need to tip the engine back to clear the oil pan, that’s where I think you’d have an issue if you had the heads still on. The heads would contact and possibly crack the firewall. That being said if you were to drop the front sub frame I’d bet you could install the engine from the top, connect to the torque tube, and with the engine still on the hoist lift the sub frame up from the bottom and mount the engine.

In my project I’m just going to try to install from the bottom after struggling to pull it from the top, but I bet it could be done following the sequence described above.

The less weight you have to manage going in top side will help you. Also it will be easier to access the top bell housing bolts. Put the OPS on after you get stuff bolted up so it won’t get damaged as you mate up clutch disc to TT shaft.

I installed my engine from the top with the heads already on. It was a bear, but it went in. I did have to loosen and lower the front subframe to clear the oil pan. I also had the TT removed.

With the torque tube removed I can see it being doable.

In reality either the torque tube or the front subframe probably needs to be removed.

It can be done heads on with the torque tube in and the subframe well down out of the way. We used a lift plate which in place of the valley cover.

We pulled the front bumper cover, foam behind the cover, hood, and radiator. The torque tube was on a jack stand high up in the tunnel and we may have used a jack without the cup so you had a smooth surface to help angle the motor pushing up on the rear of the pan. Go slow.
