ive got an old post about this problem, but the problem stopped,of intermittent no cranking of engine and now has reappeared. in terms of cranking the starter engages. its a 98 corvette. im helping a friend on this one and about ready to send it to the shop. she just put in a new battery, a new starter was installed app one year ago. i removed the clutch switch and jumped it, ohmed the keys they both seems to have the same resistance. cleaned the keyhole with spray any swabbed it with a nylon brush no change its sitting at a remote location so i have to plan a repair party.i pulled the battery cable off for the night hoping for a electrical reset, for another shot in the am. anything comes to mind to try to get another start out of it before the tow truck. could a push start work or does the fuel shut of under a security condition. it does display security on the console at times. im guessing its the vat system in the key switch but its only a guess. thanks in advance
Is this a "no crank no start" or a "no start" ??????...you said... "the intermittent no cranking of engine and now has reappeared" and then you said..."in terms of cranking the starter engages" which tells me the engine is cranking...so is it A or B ??
getting to the point across is tough at times, turn the key and nothing happens no clicking nothing! i wont try to explain what other events happened over a period of time, but all times turn the key and nothing. things took a turn for the better this morning it did crank and start. Im going with the vat system is bad, the local corvette shop said to disconnect the battery for 6 to 8 hours and the disable will reset. I told her to get it bypassed by the shop and hopefully that wiil stop the reoccurring problem. Lesson to be learn here is disconnect the battery for 8 hours to reset the shut down by theft condition would be my contribution to the info pot for all.
Not clean where side cables meet battery terminal.
It could also be one of the batteries with short threaded holes for the side terminals. Even when the side cable bolt is tight, the short threaded hole in the battery prevents adequate cable to battery contact. Sometimes intermittently.
thought i had it but it wouldnt crank this morn, battery is new good clean cons. it did start after disconnecting battery overnight. I moved it she went to get it this morn and no start again. going to tow it a have the vat system looked at
You have to rule out the VAT system which is very easy to do, remove the toe board on the passenger side footwell area, and locate the TDR relay which sits above the BCM.
Have someone try to start the car while you physically hold the TDR and verify if it is being energized, if not then it may very well be the VAT system. If it is being energized then either the TDR is at fault or there is loose battery connections and or loose connections on the starter solenoid, also check the ground connection. One sure fire way to determine what is happening is to insert a large gauge jumper wire momentarily between the heavy gauge red and violet wires in the socket where the TDR is plugged into. Word of CAUTION, this sends power directly to the starter solenoid, and bypasses the requirement for the clutch to be depressed or the shifter to be in park. If it is a manual make sure it is in neutral and E brake applied.!!!
