The DIC in my C5 has gone dark - no display, buttons have no effect. Car runs fine - just no DIC. Oddly, the headlights come on - twilight feature must have toggled on by itself/?
This related Corvette Forum thread shows the board that carries the VFD (vacuum fluorescent display). Internal parts of the cluster are not sold separately - so the selected cure in that case was to replace the whole IPC.
In a different DIC failure thread visible burn damage is found on the small board beside the main VFD board. A replacement for just the small board cured this one.
I haven't found internals available for sale - so I'm looking to buy a whole working cluster for parts.......
The bit about "noise" is curious - the instrument cluster is all electronic. It does have small speaker, maybe for alert tone?
Dick B
Yes, it does have small speaker for alert/warnig things, for example when you forgot to turn off lights or remove key from ignition. It might have similiar problem like this one https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...nder-dash.html, some people solve it by cuting the speaker completely off. If you are going to cut it off or try to do something else with it, then here is good info about disassembly https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...post1570380674
Don't get rid of your old cluster. That VFD power supply can be easily swapped out and you can retain the OEM Cluster. The mileage is also contained on one IC that can be transplanted into any working cluster.
Thanks Bill, I was hoping you might comment. I'm expecting a working cluster 11-2 or 11-3. Was thinking I'd plug it in first to be sure it works, then try swapping its VFD power supply into my unit. Take care, Dick B
My experience with the DIC failure seemed to be with the buttons. The buttons have the feel of a spring when you release them . Mine sort of went flat and stayed closed . that took out the display
My display is working again - swapping in the power supply from the replacement cluster did the trick. Everything works normally. As Bill said above its an easy swap and doesn't affect the odometer.
BTW my original power supply board has no visible defects - no burns, no smells, no cold solder joints - just doesn't light the display.
