Default pull key wait 10 seconds

My 97 M6 coupe has again started displaying the pull key wait 10 seconds message. New battery installed recently, no service column lock message, have one instance of having to yank the steering wheel to get it to unlock years ago. Wanting to correct problem without having to install a LMC5, as I still want my steering wheel to lock when car is off, I would like to know how to troubleshoot problem to determine just what is causing the message.

I've been on here reading about column lock issues for 15 years, never seen a diy fix for the pull key wait 10 seconds other than the CLB or the LMC5.

You may want to re-think keeping the CL operational. The system times the unlock sequence, and if the lock does not retract within a defined time period, the system thinks the car is being stolen. The most common cause is a low battery, but the Cl is a mechanical device subject to wear, and it may very well be that wear and gumming up from old greases.

Once it is stuck in a lock state, you are stuck too. If it is mechanical, no battery will help no matter the charge state. By the time the C5 came out, security was getting more sophisticated , making an actual lock obsolete. Really, today, no C5 is so valuable that no CL will sway a crook today and is probably more deterred by a 6sp manual than a CL

I have put the LMC5 in 2 C5’s good system and effective

The column lock will never work correctly. You are wasting your time. The LMC5 is cheap, painless to install and most of all, ACTUALLY WORKS.

And do the Brown Wire Optional install. Then you will have 0 problems.

Thanks for the replies, I have only had one instance of the steering wheel not unlocking in 14 years, it always locks and unlocks every time, just the message pops up every now and than. I will continue to research the problem before installing a LMC5.
