My new to me (one month) '01 with 44,xxx miles, just displayed the "pull key wait 10 sec" followed by "service column lock". The car shuts down after 2mph. Lucky it happened in my driveway. So... my car had the recall done in '14 at 36,xxx miles and per the dealership invoice had the steering column electronic lock replaced along with a harness kit. Is there anything I can do short of having it towed into the dealer? Thanks!
Yes. Take your battery to get load tested. Your battery could be low on charge or cannot hold the proper charge. Very common for this to be the issue along with others on the C5 electrical gremlins. Go with a 78 series battery with a 120 Reserve Capacity. A 78 series battery is bigger than stock but will fit perfectly in the battery tray and use the factory hold down.

Yes, get an LMC5 module from Compliance Parts and install it yourself! DO NOT BRING IT TO A DEALER! No matter what they do you will still have the 2 mph fuel cut off that is leaving you stranded. The LMC5 gets rid of this. Cost is under $50.
I must own a unicorn. 297,000 miles with factory recall only. BTW, bullet 5 in the article you referenced states "Low battery voltage seems to aggravate and sometimes cause column lock failures".
I don't dispute an LMC5 as a cure but I also highly recommend a verification of the battery since it affects many other systems in addition to the column lock. Most people also don't realize a weak battery wears on an alternator and there are plenty of examples of aftermarket alternators not cooperating with the C5. Weak batteries aren't good for any vehicle.
